About the Author
Patrick Hunt gained his PhD at the University of London and works as a classical archaeologist and teacher of Humanities at Stanford University, California. Additionally, he is a published poet, classical music composer, and illustrator, including contributing the illustrations to Richard Martin's Myth of the Ancient Greeks (Penguin). Hunt's wide-ranging professional and personal scholarship allows him to interpret Caravaggio's complicated religious and classical imagery while anchoring his art in his life.

Large Print, Large Reproductions, Large Scope!

There are many books devoted to the life and work of Caravaggio and it helps to have several reference books in the library of those fascinated by art history and the immeasurable impact Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio made and continues to make on the art world. This huge and heavy book is the Second Revised Edition (the first being published in 2001) and the only significant differences are the inclusion of a second Introduction and the polishing of some of the information that was in the original.
John T. Spike is an art historian form Harvard who has published books on the Florentine Renaissance, most successfully with `Masaccio' and `Fra Angelica'. Spike lives in Florence, Ital now and continues to research all the hidden corners of Italian art. The book includes a comprehensive catalogue of the works of the Caravaggio in CD format in the back panel of the book - a bit of one upsmanship that makes this expensive book worth the price.
But the most impressive aspect of this particular volume is the manner in which Spike presents the material. Everything is in chronological order, a technique that allows the reader/viewer to appreciate the growth both artistically and socio-politically. The color plates are vividly accurate and another fine aspect of this volume is the number of cropped details that accompany the full painting - far more than any other book on the artist.
In all this is a comprehensive, well-documented volume from Abbeville Press, and Amazon's price listing makes it affordable. Grady Harp, October 13

Wonderful book

It is a complete review of Caravaggio's work with beautiful illustrations and a very accurate biography. It is an extremely scholarly work, but also very easy to read. If you love Caravaggio's paintings this is a MUST to own!
