�En mis tiempos, me he despertado m�s de una vez sintiendo que me mor�a. Toda la cavidad de mi pecho y mi t�rax parec�a haberse vaciado y despu�s llenado con cemento de secado lento. Me o�a respirar d�bilmente, pero no pod�a inflar los pulmones. Mi coraz�n lat�a demasiado o demasiado poco. Cualquier movimiento, por peque�o que fuera, requer�a premeditaci�n y planificaci�n. Me exigi� un esfuerzo extenuante cruzar la habitaci�n de mi hotel de Nueva York y llamar a los servicios de urgencias. Llegaron con gran rapidez y se comportaron con inmensa cortes�a y profesionalidad. Tuve tiempo de preguntarme para qu� necesitaban tantas botas y cascos y tanto pesado equipamiento de apoyo, pero ahora que visualizo la escena retrospectivamente la veo como una deportaci�n muy amable y firme, que me llev� desde el pa�s de los sanos a la frontera inh�spita del territorio de la enfermedad. En unas horas, tras realizar una buena cantidad de trabajo en mi coraz�n y mis pulmones, los m�dicos de ese triste puesto fronterizo me hab�an ense�ado unas cuantas postales del interior, y me hab�an dicho que mi siguiente e inmediata parada tendr�a que ser con un onc�logo. Alguna clase de sombra se proyectaba en los negativos.�

Peque�o pero realista, un libro que nos enfrenta a una realidad que nos puede pasar a cualquiera, un testimonio tan dulce como triste.

Importante aprender de la forma que Hitchens enfrent� la muerte.
