Grade 3-4-Adler's text, written in a story format, gives the highlights of Lee's life and military career in chronological order. Thus, students will learn the facts and dates while enjoying the narrative. The author deals with issues such as the Civil War and slavery without going into detail. The Wallners' full-color, full-page illustrations depict battle scenes, but are not gruesome. Famous figures who interacted with Lee are quoted and illustrated in a realistic manner. Anyone reading this picture book will sense the greatness of the man and learn of the struggles that confronted him.

About the Author
David A. Adler is the author of nearly 200 books for children. He was a New York City mathematics teacher for nine years before becoming inspired to write his first book. When his wife gave birth to their first child, David stayed home to take care of his son and to write, which he has been doing ever since. He lives in Queens, NY with his wife Renee.

Review of A Picture Book of Robert E. Lee

This biography explained the life of Civil War General Robert E. Lee. This book explains his life from birth and his family, to the marriage and his influence in the war. It explained how the general was the leader of the Confederacy. The book also explains the Civil War so that it is easy for the kids to understand. In the book there are also great pictures that mildly display war along with quotes ad images from that time period.
The author did a wonderful job displaying the war and allowing children to understand the concept on a very neutral level. I also liked the outline at the end of the book on his life. It helped children really visualize the order of events.
I like this book for all the above reasons also for the ease of reading. I found it so easy to understand and I think that this book will allow the children to gain interest into biographies and the war. Maybe even lead them into reading all Adler's other biographies.

A Picture Book of Robert E. Lee

This is a great book for kids, especially between the ages of 8-11. We have used many of the pictures books for different reports that we have had to do at school. At the end of each book is a time line with all the important dates and events.
