About the Author
Lara Chase was born and raised in rural Indiana surrounded by corn fields. Finding her environment somewhat boring, she spent most of her childhood with her nose buried in a book or writing stories in her head to entertain herself. Eventually she decided she should probably start writing some of them down. After graduating high school, Lara decided a change of scenery was in order. She lived in Oklahoma, Minnesota, and Illinois picking up the first bachelor’s degree she doesn’t use and a husband. The husband she’s quite fond of, but the states she wasn’t as taken with. She moved again, but this time she was smitten. It would likely take an act of Congress to remove her from Durham, North Carolina. Since relocating, Lara has acquired another bachelor’s degree that has proven to be merely decorative. She still gets restless at times, though, so she and her husband swap houses with families in other countries. Lara wrote some of the first lines of her current project hanging precariously out of a third floor apartment window in Italy trying to get a wireless signal. Luckily, writing at home is usually less dangerous. Her greatest threat there is the disgruntled cat who keeps sitting on her keyboard.

The complexities and absurdities of life, with a fantastical bent
By K. Sprenger
This second book in the Gamayun Prophecies picks up right where the first one left off (which should make all you binge readers as happy as it made us).
Dealing with the fallout from her split with Sasha in Call of Affliction (The Gamayun Prophecies Book 1), Galine's life becomes a whirlwind of space and time fillers to help her move on. But no matter how much she tries, as the Gamayun - a Russian Folklore mythological being of prophecy - she is no longer in control of her fate. This book was quite a bit darker than the first, as Galine is so focused on getting over Sasha - while simultaneously anticipating another showdown with her biggest nemesis - that she doesn't realize there are dangers closer to her than she could ever have anticipated. And as things spiral downward in her life, she continues to do what she believes is right - even at great personal cost.
This installment of the series was heartbreaking in seeing just how bad things can get for one of God's chosen people. Can one be a Divine Appointee, yet not believe in the Divine Appointer? Galine is an intriguing character because she doesn't really believe in God or understand why she was chosen to carry this unwanted burden of immortality and fiery tongue. How does one balance the demands, needs, wants and responsibilities of daily life struggles when his or her fate is ultimately controlled by an unseen hand? There is a complexity to Galine's character that is both fascinating and inspiring, and learning some of her backstory in 'Wings of Ash' helps us understand her motivation and the source of her strength.
The writing is superb, and a fun read despite its darker tone. The complexities and absurdities of life are on full display here, and there are many moments of levity that will make you laugh out loud (yes, Galine really does say what many other people are just thinking) and other parts of the story that will infuriate you and maybe even make you cry. What's clear here is, even though Galine and the reader collective as a whole are unsure what will happen next, the author has crafted yet another story that is readable, engaging and relative to today's life despite its fantastical bent. My wife and I read these books together and are both excited for the next installment of the series when it is released.

Hold On! Wild Ride!
By Ericka
Wings of Ash is full of the DRAMA of Galine's new life as the Gayaman. The way Chase writes about Galine's duty and the extraordinary toll it takes on her mind, body and soul makes you want to stop the writing and bring out a gurney to put Galine on it yourself!! That's why as a reader we are relieved to some measure by others (I won't tell you who!!) who answer her existence with a little mercy.
Chase makes us wait 10 chapters for a favorite someone to return to the scene, but when it happens the dialogue and scenes between the protagonist and he shimmer with all the strain and agony of unrequited love. But again, for all parties involved, mercy sweeps in and relieves us (I won't tell you how!!!).
Sometimes the story might get a little weighted down by the details of what Galine sees that the rest of the world doesn't see (ie., soul birds and their journey), but we are dealing with Russian Folklore, so I would imagine the subject is pretty lengthy and intricate.
Chase has created an otherworldly world and she does it with a deft hand. The characters she has written into life have struck such a fresh balance between humanity and their mystical power. They are overwhelmed by their lives. They accept (or try to) their lives on occasion. They go about choosing to do what they are commanded to do (or not!). And so much more!! It's such a fantastic play on living. She writes about characters who live forever in a way that make you believe it's happening next door, to your neighbor, right now.
Read it. You won't be disappointed.

A Fantastic Follow-up - Don't Miss This Series
By L. Levine
I have been eager for this continuation of the Gamayun Prophecies. I was hooked by Call of Affliction and couldn't wait to see what was next for Galine and Sasha. It is not good news. Galine's suspicions about Alex were right on track and what he does is atrocious and will make you cry. We learn a lot more about Sasha's past. We also learn more about Galine's father. There are lots of surprises and big changes for all of the characters. I can't wait for the next book now to see where it all goes.
I highly recommend this series. Please do read the first book before starting the second so you can really enjoy the richness of the story. It is just a really unique story and like nothing I have read before. The characters are really complex and developed and I really identified with Galine from the beginning. She is such a fighter. She refuses to give in or give up regardless of the circumstances. Galine always prioritizes those she cares for above herself. I think that is why I liked Sasha so much as he is the only one who really makes sure she is taken care of too. He always puts her first. They are a great couple with amazing chemistry. Yes, their love is an important element of the story but at the heart it is so much more than a romance. I love mythology and history and the Russian elements of the story appeal to me a great deal.
I received a copy in return for a honest review.
