Anne Magurran is Professor of Ecology and Evolution at the University of St Andrews. Sir Bob May is Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government, and is based at the Department of Zoology, University of Oxford.

Without alternative

The title is no exaggeration: This book is the THE fundamental source of traffic flow theory.
I know no book that is that comprehensive; the extensive coverage of macroscopic and microscopic traffic flow theory is supplemented by traffic demand modeling, intersection planning, traffic simulation...
I am not aware of another publication containing such a broad content. Regardless whether you are scientist in traffic modeling or practitioner, there is no alternative to this book. Although not updated since 1990, most is still valid today. A remarkable exception is the chapter about traffic simulation since the significant progress during the last two decades is not covered (-1 star).
Plus, the physical quality is very low: Soft-cover almost as thin as any page, printed in black & white, weak binding (some pages loose after only a week of careful reading). For approximately $100, I'd expect better. (-1 star).
Regardless of these handicaps, I strongly recommend this book. There is no better. I hope, though, there will be an updated edition one day.

Does the job

I bought this book, Traffic Flow Fundamentals by Adolf D. May, for my CE 571 Traffic Flow Analysis class. As for the material in the book, I find the author's style of writing to be quite helpful. However, unless you are really careful with the book as you read it, the binding falls apart REALLY easily. I cracked my book's spine when I first opened it trying to lay it flat on the table and my classmate's book has all of the pages he has read falling out of it so he had a similar experience with it. After cracking the binding once, I was able to avoid future cracking by making sure not to apply any pressure to the spine and only open the book just enough to read all of the page, but I know no everyone likes to read that way. Maybe the hardback version would be better, if there is one.
I bring this up only for resale value since many students try to sell their books back.

Good book, bad quality!

It can be a good textbook for your study. However, the pages start to come off after two months of moderate usage! I understand that it is a paperback book but the spine should still hold up better. I certainly hope I just got a lime this time. But as far as I have experienced, the quality is clearly not as impressive as the contents. If you decide to keep the book and refer back frequently for a long time, I would suggest you buy a hardcover version. Service from Amazon is as good as usual.
