The Designer’s Guide to Jitter in Ring Oscillators provides information for engineers on designing voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) and phase-locked loops (PLLs) for low jitter applications such as serial data communication and clock synthesis. The material is presented in a clear, intuitive fashion at both the system level and the circuit level to help designers improve their understanding of fundamental noise sources and design low jitter circuitry within power, area, and process constraints so that ultimate performance meets system level requirements.

At the system level, the authors describe and specify different methods of measuring jitter to characterize time domain uncertainty. Although the emphasis is on time-domain measures of oscillator performance, a simple method of translating performance to frequency domain (phase noise) measures is also included.

At the circuit level, the authors include techniques for design of low jitter delay elements for use in ring oscillators, as well as relating the circuit-level characteristics to system-level performance. The authors�discuss a classification scheme for delay stages to help guide the designer’s choice with regard to signal type (single-ended vs. differential), output format (single phase vs. multiple phase), and tuning method. Simple mathematical expressions are developed describing the noise-power tradeoffs for each type of stage, so the designer can quickly estimate the power dissipation required to achieve a desired level of jitter.

About the Author
Professor David Ricketts qualified at Guy's Hospital Dental School, now GKT Kings College, in 1986. Following an Oral Surgery House Officer post and two years in general practice he returned to Guy's Hospital to study for an MSc in conservative dentistry. During this period his main research interest in cariology and, in particular, its diagnosis and appropriate management began which led to the award of a PhD in 1995. David has since published widely in his research area and in other aspects of restorative dentistry and his research has led to collaboration with colleagues in numerous European countries and the USA. In 1999 David moved to Dundee and was promoted to Senior Lecturer / Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in 2003. In 2006 he became Leader of the Section of Operative Dentistry, Fixed Prosthodontics and Endodontology at Dundee Dental School and in 2008 he was awarded a personal Chair in Cariology and Conservative Dentistry.

Edward A.� Polloway is the Rosel H. Schewel Chair of Education at Lynchburg College in Virginia, where he has taught since 1976 after receiving his doctoral degree from the University of Virginia. He served twice as president of the Division on Developmental Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children and on the Board of Directors of the Council for Learning Disabilities. He also served on the committee that developed a prior definition of intellectual disability (mental retardation) for the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Polloway is the author of 22 books and over 100 articles in the field of special education, with primary interest in the areas of learning disabilities and intellectual disabilities.

Teresa Taber Doughty is a professor of special education and Associate Dean in the College of Education at Purdue University. She has published more than 50 scholarly articles, books, and book chapters on topics related to serving individuals with disabilities and conducted numerous presentations to national and international audiences. She is a former president and current executive director of the Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children.

I would buy this book for the first chapter alone- which contains one of the best explanations of algorithm complexity and effic

An absolute gem in clarity and depth of topic. I only have a background in C/C++ with a little knowledge of discrete math. This book builds upon those knowledge and takes you in-depth with the different algorithms and how to analyze their complexity. I would buy this book for the first chapter alone- which contains one of the best explanations of algorithm complexity and efficiency, without stripping the academic overtone (formal definitions). There plenty of examples provided by the author is the perfect pedagogy for anyone who learns by example and I cannot overstate how eloquent and easy to understand the author makes the material out to be, eventhough they are quite difficult concepts. Dr. Neapolitan book should come highly recommended to anyone who struggled with other Algorithm books not just for a graduate or undergrad course, but also for self-study.

I tried those algorithm books

Algorithm Design by Kleiberg
Algorithms (4th Edition) by Sedgewick

My favorite is Neapolitan's, because
1.
It covers both design paradigms and complexity analysis.
Kleinberg's focus on design paradigm, and
Sedgewick's focus on complexity analysis of already existing algorithms.
Neapolitan is somewhere between those two.
2.
I like the author's presentation style.
: it start with a very easy algorithm at the beginning of each chapter and gradually increase the difficulty.
It really helps to understand the design paradigm, NOT to memorize each algorithm.
3.
It contains pseudo code, making the book practical.
This also makes the reading more clear and compact.

Good Algorithms book

This was a great algorithms book. I used it for a grad level algorithms course where we went in depth into every chapter of this book, and I am very glad that he chose this book. This books makes all of the chapters relatively easy, even when the algorithm being discussed is fairly difficult to grasp. I am going to be reading CLRS next during my free time to better understand some of the harder to grasp algorithms and in order to learn some algorithms not discussed in this book, as it is cheaper than this book and more highly regarded, but I still really enjoyed this book.

all you ever wanted to know and more...

I picked up this book out of curiosity...knowing absolutely nothing about the exploration of the islands in the Pacific by European explorers in the 18th century. This book is incredibly well researched and full of lots of information, but is still very interesting and kept my attention most of the time. I assumed (correctly, it seems) that the explorers were chauvinistic and exploitative, but what I did not know is that some were actually caring and good human beings who treated the inhabitants as equals and tried to understand them and their cultures. This book taught me a great deal about this subject, and was well worth the time to read it.

good information, bad writing

The premise for this book is quite interesting: it presents a continuous history of Tahiti during the period following first European contact, with a lot of information on local customs, politics, and events that were missed or misunderstood by the Europeans. In reading the journals of the explorers, you only get the European view of things, which was very much influenced by European traditions of myth and political thought. Here you get the Polynesian viewpoint as well. I think Salmond did a lot of research here and generally conveyed things accurately, as far as I'm familiar with the original sources myself.

Some parts of the book are very heavy going because of all the Tahitian names are hard to keep straight, but my big complaint is that the text badly needs editing. There's a lot of repetitiveness in the text that is just sloppiness (mentioning the same trivial factoid 3 times in as many pages, or twice in the same paragraph). And is it really correct by Spanish naming conventions to refer to Jos� de And�a y Varela as "y Varela"? I also thought that some chapters could have been really tightened up and made more readable by making a point and citing relevant incidents, rather than page after page of wandering chronological narrative.

About the Author
Antonio Morena is a graduate of Middlebury College (BA / MA) and has received a Laurea from the University of Florence. In September 2008 he received his PhD from Harvard University (Department of Romance Languages & Literatures). He is currently an adjunct lecturer at Bentley College and has been teaching at the Harvard Extension School since 2003. During the summer he is a visiting professor at the Middlebury College Italian School.

Donatella Melucci was born and raised in Italy. She earned her Laurea in Lingue e Letterature Straniere from the University of Bari, Italy, and received a doctorate in English Rhetoric/Composition & Linguistics from Arizona State University where she taught for many years. She is now a Visiting Assistant Professor at Georgetown University in Washington DC. Her field of specialization is methodologies for teaching Italian as a second/foreign language. Her studies have also focused on the use of technology in foreign language classes.

Annamaria Moneti was born and raised in Italy. She received a Laurea di Dottore in Lettere from the Universita di Roma. She has had extensive teaching experiences at Liceo Classico,Italy; Universite II, Geneva, Switzerland; Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York. Moneti has authored two volumes of Conversazioni in Italiano and is a co-author of the AMICI series. She serves as a consultant for the New York State Education Department, and is a member of the Phi Beta Delta, Honor Society for International Scholars, and PHI SIGMA IOTA, International Foreign Languages Honor Society.

Graziana Lazzarino is Professor of Italian at the University of Colorado, Boulder. She is a native of Genoa, received her Laurea from the University of Genoa, and has taught at various European schools and American colleges and universities. She is also the author of In giro per l'Italia: A Brief Introduction to Italian, Da capo: A Review of Grammar, and Per tutti i gusti.

excellent grammar book

I bought this a few years ago for an evening class. The class wasn't too good, but I worked my way through the book and found it excellent. The explanations are clear and straightforward, the vocabulary is useful, and you can actually learn a lot about how to use the subjunctive and the conditional. It also has useful information about troublesome cognates and word usage. I would recommend this quite highly for anyone trying to learn Italian. It's a review grammar so in theory you should already know a little Italian, but if you have some knowledge of French, Spanish or Latin, or if you just have a positive attitude, you should have no problems with this book.

Having started Advanced Italian lessons, I find Da Capo an excellent review of the grammar structure and a good vocabulary enhancer for those who have had a comprehensive overview of Italian through beginning and intermediate classes. It starts off at a steady pace that allows students to review rules and those pesky exceptions. It maintains a good level of interest, espcially important since it main task is to review previously learned materials. Although I find the book a bit pricey, especially for a paperback, it is a great way to master previously studied material and bridge the gap from familiarity to fluency in the Italian Language. Bravo!

DA Capo As An Italian Textbook

Da Capo, as the title "From the Begining" states, does start with basic Italian essentials; it is not, however, a true beginner's text. It is an excellent text for intermediate students who have had classes, had some working knowledge of Italian, or had finished using a primary test. The book offers vocabulary, dialogues, reading pieces and exercises which showcase Italian culture. It does not, as do some of the other Italian texts, offer inane conversation or translation pieces simply to illustrate the lesson's grammar and vocabulary. The lessons include day-to-day speech patterns, not just the stiff grammatically correct phrases that one is unlikely to hear in everyday Italian conversation. The grammar lessons are well designed in a concentrated fashion. Da Capo is a worthwhile follow-on textbook for students who are both serious about studying the Italian language and putting some effort into that study.

Very simplified, the temptations are putting self first, wanting to be liked rather than to lead, making decisions reluctantly, elevating harmony above productive argument, and not trusting subordinates. The author's discussions at the end of the story help clarify the main points, and the narration is nicely done by Boyd Gaines. You're probably guilty of at least one.

The *Five Temptations of a CEO* is a quick and worthy read for leaders and managers.

The book describes five common leadership pitfalls – even the most experienced managers will find themselves guilty at one point or another:

1. Being more interested in career status than achieving results.
2. Wanting to be popular with your direct reports instead of holding them accountable.
3. Wanting to ensure that your decisions are correct.
4. Desire for harmony.
5. Desire for invulnerability.

My biggest personal takeaways:

* Measure yourself by your achievements, not job title or position on the ladder.
* Don't get too friendly with subordinates – this will potentially hold back your ability to hold them accountable. Your job is to deliver results for the company, not be popular with your employees.
* Make sure goals and measures of success are clearly defined sooner rather than later. Without clarity, there's nothing to hold anyone accountable to. Make decisions even if you aren't 100% sure they are correct.
* Make sure members of your team feel safe and willing to engage in intense debates. Encourage them to challenge your ideas.

A must have for every executive

Lencioni has hit a real home run with this short book. I am a CEO of a small business, and regularly meet with other owners of small businesses, and see all around me their excellence and their failures. So many of these are my own failures, as well.
So, as with any group, the largest limitation to the group growing or becoming what it should be, is the limitation on the growth of the leadership in the organization, in specific, the growth of the leader.
To that end, the leader must grow at a rate at least 2 years ahead of where the company is, right now.
To figure out what that might be for you, imagine the growth of your organization succeeds at the rate you would like, then ask yourself, "What institutions, training, development, policies etc must be fully functioning then, to mKe it successful at that level?" The answer defines where you as leader, need to be today.
This book covers 5 of the key issues of leadership, in a short, easy to understand way, to give you a framework for the growth you need.
I now buy it, and give it to the CEOs I meet as a gift to the future of their organization.

Powerful Work from Lencioni...once again!

Some years ago, a friend recommend The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by this author and I fell for his writing style and wisdom. Reading books on business leadership are purposeful but also pleasurable for me. I love to dig into business leadership and seek to apply the principles to different areas of my life.

I purchased this 10th anniversary edition of the book recently. Honestly I struggled a bit with purchasing it since I do not consider myself a CEO at all; however, the book would share principles of leadership and I decided to do so anyway. In this book, Lencioni shares a business "fable" whereby he examines the plight of a particular CEO. In the fable, this CEO comes across a "truth-speaker" (this time in a dream) who imparts to him 5 mistakes that CEOs who fail...make. These are not innate characteristics, but are temptations that, if not mastered, will certainly be the demise of the business leader. The temptations are:
* Choosing status over results
* Choosing popularity over accountability
* Choosing certainty over clarity
* Choosing harmony over conflict
* Choosing invulnerability over trust

Each of the temptations drive to the heart of what it is to be a leader. A CEO often functions without close accountability other than to a Board or Shareholders. As such, much of his daily management must come from self-discipline.

While many things caught my attention in the book, one particular observation was driven home:
"...A great president of the United States wouldn't be as proud of being elected as he would of actually accomplishing something. And a nonprofit agency shouldn't feel good getting funds unless they did something meaningful with the money. And there isn't a great coach alive who would say that his best day was getting hired. Winning games and championships is what great coaching is all about" (p.29).

This particular quote reminds me of the fact that great leaders do not play it safe or consider their role as accomplishment. Their role of leadership is for a purpose and every great CEO must understand that he is accountable to DO SOMETHING with the mantle of leadership that benefits the organization he leads. "Leaders" who simply exist and entertain the masses or maintain the status quo...aren't really leaders at all.

I recommend this book and this author. It is an easy read and offers many opportunities for self-evaluation. It also is a sobering examination for the reader. 5 stars again Lencioni!
