Bright Minds, Poor Grades

This is an excellent book for the parents of G/T students who are not bringing home the great grades they are capable of making. I have a 12 year old who tests in the 99 percentile on acheivement tests, is a Duke Tip student that received state recognition for his SAT scores as a 7th grader. His grades were C's, D's and F's. His teachers wanted him out of G/T classes but the Counselor and Principal realized that he would do worse in regular classes since G/T classes allow students to be more creative but-- this requires independence on the students part. His problems are with being independent and reponsible for his grades. This book has been amazing in helping us teach our child to be independent. Type A children are independent and competitive naturally. We must teach our Type B (but bright) children these skills. A must for parents everywhere who have bright kids with poor grades. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

My fifth grade son was showing every sign of classic underachievement. He had had a fourth grade teacher that made him feel like a complete failure, and he took that lesson to heart. His fifth grade year was littered with missing assignments, half-completed work, lies about schoolwork, and an overall horrible attitude. I felt like I was losing my child at the age of 11.
We tried the usual (punishment, lectures, etc.) to no avail. I bought this book, read it and implemented it to the best of my ability. It was counterintuitive to me (no punishment for bad behavior?) but I'm so thankful I went against my intuition.
It proceeded about like he described: two months of not a lot of progress, then the tide began to turn. The turning of the tide, however, corresponded to the end of the school year. He moved from elementary school to middle school, and is doing quite well. He's getting A's and B's in the honor program, is excited about school, and confident of his ability to succeed.
My only complaint about the book is that there aren't a lot of "success" stories included.

This is a great book. Dr. Michael Whitley has hit a home run.
Here is his premise. Kids want to be independent but as teenagers they are not quite ready. I disagree with the reviewer who says this book will not work on kids who are too far gone. Can you ever classify a kid as too far gone? I doubt it. The techniques discussed in this book are good for all ages of "children" who procrastinate and not just for helping children with school work. Many adults are locked in a syndrome of underachieving because they never had parents who let them experience success and failure in a loving, tolerant enviornment.
The parent is in charge. He does not rant and rave but talks to the child in a calm reassuring voice. The child begins to realize that he is ultimately responsible for his own decisions.
The parent keeps close track of the child's progress but withholds judgement. The child becomes his own best critic. The child appreciates the parental care and lack of criticism. If the child slips it is another teaching moment. Ingenious.
So far so good in our family, I hope this book helps yours too.

Here it is again – ‘Tolley’s Company Law Handbook’, now in its 20th edition from LexisNexis! Be you a solicitor, accountant or company secretary, this is the Handbook you have to have, especially as this new edition contains a significant amount of new material.

In fact, we would say that this authoritative work of reference with over 1,400 pages is well nigh indispensible. Not only does the latest edition keep you au fait with the latest developments in company law, it, at the same time, maintains a balance between accountancy and law.

Now that the Companies Act 2006 is fully in force, this handbook provides coverage of it in full. There’s an editorial reminder here that the Act extends to the whole of the UK, including (rather than excluding) Northern Ireland. New material therefore includes new requirements from Companies House for the filing of annual returns by certain types of companies.

It also reflects significant and substantial changes to the City Code on Takeovers and Mergers. In another new development, the requirements for overseas companies to register charges over property in the UK have now been removed. Other company law provisions are also covered (with the exception of insolvency) including the Listing Rules, Prospectus Rules, Disclosure and Transparency Rules and the Takeovers Code, plus of course, case law.

As a work of reference, this handbook offers in-built accessibility in that, first of all, chapters are alphabetized for ease of use, from Accounts, Annual Returns and Audit to Shares and Takeovers. Note that the category of ‘Accounts’ covers small, medium sized and large companies.

In the Kindle edition, Norman calls Oscar Hammerstein II a composer. He was not. He was a lyricist who collaborated with composers.

He also refers to Mike Nichols having a background as a standup comic. He did not. Nichols teamed with Elaine May to play satiric scenes. He didn't bat out jokes and observations (the realm of the standup), he acted in material he created with May out of improvisation.

Which makes me wonder if the book were copy-edited.

Quibbles aside, I gulped this book down.

Yes, there are people I would have liked to have read about. And I think more could have been made about the screenwriters like the Davids (Chase, Milch and Simon) who have shifted to TV (particularly HBO) where they've got power and respect and where the writing is now better than in most movies. I also think he could have paid attention to the influence the improvisational-satirical companies like Second City had on Amererican screenwriting (Paul Mazursky, Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Alan Alda, David Mamet, etc.), but then I wrote a book about Second City and the subject's of particular interest to me.

But as a coherent story that provides the context for most of the major challenges, controversies and battles screenwriters have had to face, this pretty much hits the spot. I was particularly interested to learn of the influence the Dramatists Guild contract had on the politics of the Writers Guild. (I sit on the Council of the Dramatists Guild, and this was news to me.) Norman's prose style goes down easy, and his talent as a story-teller makes the struggles of these introverted creatures dramatic and often poignant.

I do hope he's working on more of his own screenplays. SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (which he modestly doesn't mention in this text) was one of the best-written films in years.

How does this book only have six reviews?

I have not yet finished this book, a comprehensive survey of 20th Century screenwriting, because I don't want it to end. Because there is no other book like it. So I am parcelling it out, like a child trying to make his Halloween candy last until Christmas. Wonderfully written, entertaining, and epic. Outstanding on all counts. This book earns a spot on that small shelf of must-read books about filmmaking and filmmakers. A great and worthy achievement.

This book is phenomenal. Not only is it well-written and comprehensive, but it fills a horrendous gap in the legacy of screenwriting and its impact on movies.

Other than Ian Hamilton's terrific work on the early years of screenwriting, this book immediately becomes the cornerstone, the bedrock of the genre -- and for very good reason. It's not just a book about the writers themselves, but how the art and craft of screenwriting have evolved in the context of film. What we get is an alternate point of view that has for too long been neglected in entry-level cinema history.

Starting from Edison, Edwin Porter and D.W. Griffith, we travel the well-trodden (but freshly invigorated) path through the studio system and on into modern movie-making -- with the twist that the writer has not been brushed aside. In fact, we immediately see how crucial key scribes have contributed to the development of the art.

It's a cliche in Hollywood that the writer is abused and overlooked (ask a striking member of the WGA if you don't believe me). But other than a work stoppage, nothing can rectify the place of the writer in the public's awareness more than a historical overview with the screenwriter placed in his or her rightful place -- at the center of the creative process itself.

This is not a scree or a polemic, but a finely written, highly entertaining look at Hollywood. I find myself referring to it all the time. In fact, I've recreated my entire Netflix queue around areas of my movie history that could use some screenings. And I've become a big fan of Anita Loos! (You too will discover that at least 50% of the early screenwriters were women, with Anita being its first breakout star.)

Like a great film, this book immerses you in a world and rivets you to your chair. If you are a writer or a curious film buff, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy. It will reward you with many great nights of delight and discovery -- a claim not enough movies themselves can make these days.

Dysfunctional Board Control

If you want to spark some healthy conflict in your next conversation with nonprofit CEOs or senior pastors, throw this verbal grenade into the discussion: "Hey! What do you all think about policy governance?"

According to Policy Governance Guru John Carver, "Governing by policy means governing out of policy in the sense that no board activity takes place without reference to policies. Most resolutions in board meetings will be motions to amend the policy structure in some way. Consequently, policy development is not an occasional board chore but its chief occupation."

I mention this because I consult frequently with nonprofit boards--and conduct governance webinars and workshops in North America and overseas. And even though the majority of boards I work with say they function as "policy governance" boards, I don't believe them--because their micro-managing practices are so blatant.

For example, consider John Carver's insight on what he calls the flaws of "The Approval Syndrome." They include: reactivity, sheer volume of material, mental misdirection, letting staff off the hook, unfairly putting staff on the hook, short-term bias, lack of clarity in the board's contribution, and fragmentation ("a sequence of disconnected and unmanageably voluminous vertical slices of the whole...instead of a holistic, manageable fabric of horizontally connected policies").

He adds, "We all profess that boards should deal with the big picture, but it is difficult to picture the forest by inspecting one tree at a time."

One of my favorite Carver counter-intuitive commentaries describes what happens when a board delivers a "vote of confidence" for the CEO during a crisis situation.

In this excellent policy governance bible, he writes, "Curiously, there are times when the board goes through the approval process not intending to withhold authority from the CEO but to confirm it. A board might declare its supports for the CEO by cloaking some controversial executive decision with the prestige of the boardroom. Board motivation is usually expressed thus: `We want the staff (or others) to know the board is really behind the CEO on this.' As long as the board and CEO understand that the decision is truly the CEO's, this approval not only seems harmless but appears to be a healthy show of solidarity."

Then Carver adds this zinger. "However, such a gesture of board support is called for only if the board has been sending weak signals about the nature of delegation. This kind of support is rarely warranted if the board has made it clear to all that all CEO decisions that are within board-stated bounds are always supported by the board. Official support of a specific action implies that such sporadic backup is necessary, or conversely, that the general philosophy of delegation is weak."

Carver notes--in his massive 340-page hardback, with another 80 pages of resources and references--that "Board approvals are an unnecessary and dysfunctional method of board control, then, regardless of the ubiquity of the practice." He goes on--in succeeding chapters--to build the case for "a more proactive, fair, and detrivializing approach to fulfilling the board's moral and legal obligation to control the organization."

If no one on the senior team or board of your nonprofit organization or church is familiar with Carver's brand of policy governance (he invented the term), this is the starting point. Whether you agree or disagree that this board approach is right for your organization, it's important to understand the continuum of choices available--and to seek consensus on defining your current reality and where your preferred governance future lies. Interestingly, the book includes an excellent "ends" policy (a big Carver term) from Lancaster County Bible Church.

Note: If 340 pages are a tad too much for you, Carver has a series of booklets, focusing on niche policy governance issues. Another option is to check out the "lean and mean" approach, favored by many including myself, of a 10- to 15-page Board Policies Manual, as described in the book, Good Governance for Nonprofits: Developing Principles and Policies for an Effective Board, by Frederic L. Laughlin and Robert C. Andringa.

Book of theory with few if any practical applications. ...

Book of theory with few if any practical applications. A real sleeper, especially for insomniacs. No disrespect to author, but the concepts need to be written in ways that inspire members of volunteer nonprofit Boards to take positive action. I would like to say that the book was sent from Idaho Youth Ranch, and they were EXCELLENT, book arrived quickly, in perfect, undamaged, condition, like new! Idaho Youth Ranch provided outstanding service. My criticism is of the actual content of the book and how it was treated: far more theory and academic, than practical applications which I wanted. Online summaries are far less tedious.

As Good as a Novel

This is an excellent analysis of the power dynamics within not-for-profit organisations. John Carver knows his stuff. In this book he perceptively identifies many of the problems and bottlenecks in the governance and management operations of organisations that are meant to serve communities. Not only this, he also offers solutions based on an understanding of how decisions get made, who holds power and responsibility, and who must be accountable and to whom. One of the most helpful books I have ever read on the subject. Many lights popped on and pennies dropped for me as I read reflecting on my own thirty years of experience working with many different NFP organisations. I read each chapter as avidly as a novel. Charles E. Thomas, Ph.D., is a professor and division chair at Lee College, where he teaches Process Technology, Safety Management, and Manufacturing Engineering. Widely regarded as the foremost textbook author on process technology, Dr. Thomas is credited with creating the discipline in the 1990s. His prior professional experience includes tenure with Exxon Research and Engineering and Exxon Chemicals in a variety of operational, research and development, and training system roles.
