About the Author
Susan Fawcett started teaching English at Bronx Community College right after she finished college. The idea for the EVERGREEN books grew out of her frustration that adults needed remediation but the only material available had a tone more appropriate for middle school students. She occasionally teaches a class in Miami, where she lives in the winter and writes full time.

Hunt's wide-ranging professional and personal scholarship allows him to interpret Caravaggio's complicated religious and classical imagery while anchoring his art in his life.

Large Print, Large Reproductions, Large Scope!

There are many books devoted to the life and work of Caravaggio and it helps to have several reference books in the library of those fascinated by art history and the immeasurable impact Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio made and continues to make on the art world. This huge and heavy book is the Second Revised Edition (the first being published in 2001) and the only significant differences are the inclusion of a second Introduction and the polishing of some of the information that was in the original.

John T. Spike is an art historian form Harvard who has published books on the Florentine Renaissance, most successfully with `Masaccio' and `Fra Angelica'. Spike lives in Florence, Ital now and continues to research all the hidden corners of Italian art. The book includes a comprehensive catalogue of the works of the Caravaggio in CD format in the back panel of the book - a bit of one upsmanship that makes this expensive book worth the price.

But the most impressive aspect of this particular volume is the manner in which Spike presents the material. Everything is in chronological order, a technique that allows the reader/viewer to appreciate the growth both artistically and socio-politically. The color plates are vividly accurate and another fine aspect of this volume is the number of cropped details that accompany the full painting - far more than any other book on the artist.

In all this is a comprehensive, well-documented volume from Abbeville Press, and Amazon's price listing makes it affordable. Grady Harp, October 13

It is a complete review of Caravaggio's work with beautiful illustrations and a very accurate biography. It is an extremely scholarly work, but also very easy to read. If you love Caravaggio's paintings this is a MUST to own!

Made me dislike Badiou and Plato more than I already did, no mean feat. i don't see how this airy-fairy concept-crunching is supposed to help anyone. I just find it vaguely sinister.

a decent book

This book gives a good summary of theory as well as algorithm (in C code written to illustrate the algorithm rather than optimal performance). If you are looking for a high-level book that throughly explains theory then this is not the one. If you want theory and some example code then this is a good buy. The bibliography at the end of each chapter gives great pointers of where to go for more detailed theory. I would recommend this to students in image processing or professionals who have to acquire image processing skills.

My only major complaint is the low quality example pictures. They are small and all in black and white. Otherwise I would have given this book 4 stars.

Rare IP book with C code

Hi:

This is one of the rare books on image processing that delights the reader with REAL computer language code: C. I classify it as a MUST HAVE. The author presents the basics on image processing algorithms: frequency domain - FFT, discrete cosine; spatial domain - filters, enhancement, edge detection; image compression and image segmentation. You find a combination of formulas, techniques background and C code, directly related to the formulas.
The C code resembles Fortran programmers, with the use of uppercase (N1, N2, MM, etc.), one character variables (N, M), but it's no sin. You can fix it!
This is one of my favored book on DIP. If you buy this book, you will not repent. By far, a good buy.

covers a lot, sometimes awkwardly

Many topics in image enhancement, analysis, compression and description. The algorithms are usually 1 page or less of C code.

I'd prefer more intuitive descriptions of the ideas. The formulas and computer code are usually harder to read than for the reader to come up with himself, if the basic idea is expressed well in English.

Could be smoother presentation. For example, in histogram equalization, Pitas brings up pdf's then says the histogram is an approximation to the pdf. But there really is nothing to be gained intuitively or otherwise by bringing the pdf into the discussion at all -- we're really just equalizing the histogram.

About the Author
Born in Ryton-on-Tyne in 1946, Howard Kendall started his illustrious football career with Preston North End as a 15-year-old wing half and in 1964 became the youngest player to appear in an FA Cup Final. He signed for Everton in 1967 and became one of the club's greatest players, winning the League Championship and serving as captain. He later played for Birmingham City and Stoke City, before turning to management with Blackburn Rovers. In 1981 he embarked on the first of three managerial spells at Everton, twice winning the League Championship, the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup. Kendall was also twice crowned Manager of the Year. He left to join Athletic Bilbao in 1987, interspersing spells back at Goodison with interludes at Manchester City, Notts County and Sheffield United. Named Everton's Manager of the Millennium, he remains a popular face at Goodison Park and writes a weekly column for the Liverpool Echo.
