This text is intended as a one semester introduction to algebraic topology at the undergraduate and beginning graduate levels. Basically, it covers simplicial homology theory, the fundamental group, covering spaces, the higher homotopy groups and introductory singular homology theory. The text follows a broad historical outline and uses the proofs of the discoverers of the important theorems when this is consistent with the elementary level of the course. This method of presentation is intended to reduce the abstract nature of algebraic topology to a level that is palatable for the beginning student and to provide motivation and cohesion that are often lacking in abstact treatments. The text emphasizes the geometric approach to algebraic topology and attempts to show the importance of topological concepts by applying them to problems of geometry and analysis. The prerequisites for this course are calculus at the sophomore level, a one semester introduction to the theory of groups, a one semester introduc� tion to point-set topology and some familiarity with vector spaces. Outlines of the prerequisite material can be found in the appendices at the end of the text. It is suggested that the reader not spend time initially working on the appendices, but rather that he read from the beginning of the text, referring to the appendices as his memory needs refreshing. The text is designed for use by college juniors of normal intelligence and does not require "mathematical maturity" beyond the junior level.

Good Introduction

This is a unique book and I don't know of any other like it. It is targeted towards undergrads and I was able to read it after having only taken one semester courses in topology and algebra. The appendices are incredible useful, especially the one on algebra. As someone who came to this book having only been exposed to rings in my algebra course, I was able to quickly get up to speed on groups by simply reading the appendix. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who has some exposure to topology and algebra and wants to learn some basic algebraic topology. It will help you build intuition and prepare you for a more advanced book like Hatcher.

About the Author

Yasuo Kokubun received his B.E. degree from Yokohama National University, Yokohama, Japan, in 1975 and M.E. and Dr. Eng. degrees from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan, in 1977 and 1980, respectively. After he worked for the Research Laboratory of Precision Machinery and Electronics, Tokyo Institute of Technology, as a research associate from 1980 to 1983, he joined the Yokohama National University as an associate professor in 1983, and is now a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. From 2006 to 2009 he served as the Dean of Faculty of Engineering and is now the Vice-President of Yokohama National University. His current research is in integrated photonics including waveguide-type functional devices and three-dimensional integrated photonics, and also in optical fibers including multi-core fibers. From 1984 to 1985 he was with AT&T Bell Laboratories as a visiting researcher studying a novel waveguide on a semiconductor substrate (ARROW) for integrated optics. From 1996 to 1999, he led the Three-dimensional microphotonics project at the Kanagawa Academy of Science and Technology. Professor Kokubun is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a Fellow of the Japan Society of Applied Physics, a Fellow of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, and a member of the Optical Society of America.

Good, needs editing

The story of Alexander and crew is fun and has lots of action. However, there may be too much.

Reading this second book in the series, it feels like a whirlwind of a plot that comes across as underdeveloped. Each step in the plot feels rushed as you move along. And you can't get away from the feeling that everybody, everywhere the characters go also unreal.

For example, you'll meet the sea captain who gives 'precise orders to his men' who in turn follow those orders 'precisely and concisely.' With a bit of help from an editor the author could better convey these archetypal traits through plot development. I.e., the captain gives a concise order and the crew goes about it. The reader could then observe what the author is trying to convey without reading through banal lists of character traits frequently seen in exposition.

At one point while I was reading this I actually stopped and started reading another story because I was so fed up with the middle of the story, how rushed it felt, and how the author was telling me how people were rather than showing me. And this was despite the fact that I generally liked the story.

I eventually came back to finish the book and the end was a bit better. The best advice I can offer is for the author to develop characters through dialogue and plot rather than simplistic lists of character traits and to slow down the pacing to develop each major plot point--even if that means some minor plot events are removed or the entire length of the book is increased.

good with issues

This is a good book in dire need of a pro editor. It's certainly not terrible but there are annoyances such as in the first book how it seemed the main character just fell in love. The author tells you it's so without letting you share in that journey. It just happened. That's not the only issue nor is it the only instance of the author strong arming the reader but that disconnect makes this book more irritating in parts than it should. That said I bought the second book... I'll probably buy the rest. There's an unpolished gem here. I just wish more time was spent getting this interesting story into shape.

Good stuff

I enjoyed book one well enough, but I felt like he repeated himself a little bit to much (In the Style of one Terry Goodkind)and that made me somewhat skeptical of book 2. But all in all I liked the characters and the story moved at a decent clip so I said screw it and went for it. Doesn't hurt it's reasonably priced either.

But he seems to have dropped that repeating business and the story is really picking up speed. I'm looking forward to the next book and seeing what else Mr. Wells has written that I might enjoy. Quite pleased I went ahead and picked up book two.

About the Author

Visual art was Serena Barton's first love as a child. She moved on to acting in local plays and later became a licensed professional counselor. Serena rediscovered her desire to make art following her first trip to Italy. She taught herself to paint and create mixed-media work in midlife, proving it's never too late to create!

Serena holds creativity and art workshops, and groups and individual art coaching at her studio and at national art retreats. She exhibits and sells her work through galleries and shops, as well as online. Serena has published Wabi-Sabi Art Workshop (North Light, 2013) and A Joyful Frenzy, a book of her artwork with text on the stories and processes behind the work. Her magazine articles have appeared in issues of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine and Studios magazines and in Cloth Paper Scissors e-Books.

Serena's great joy is to provide an atmosphere in which you can discover or rekindle your own creative abilities. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her partner and near her children and grandchild. She loves hanging out with family and friends, and is an avid reader.

Excellent in Every Way

I am fairly new to painting with cold wax so I wanted a book that had lots of good "how to" information in it. Not only did this book have numerous, detailed and color-illustrated techniques, I was equally drawn to the outstanding selection of art works that were included. It's rare that I find a book that includes so many pieces that I wish I could create. Various talented cold wax artists show their techniques and discuss their inspiration. Nothing is held back. It is a very motivating book and I believe all levels of artists can draw from it--one of the best art books I have purchased in years.

Another excellent book by Serena Barton

I enjoyed Serena's first book, Wabi-Sabi Art Workshop, so much that I've really been looking forward to this one. And It's just as good as I had hoped it would be! I work with encaustic (hot wax, resin and pigments) and often get questions from my students about working with cold wax. They are very different mediums, so while I am familiar with cold wax painting I consider Serena to be my expert resource. I'm excited to have this book as a reference for myself and for my classes. It's very thorough with easy to follow directions for a wide variety of techniques and materials, plus I'm especially glad to see the sections on composition and choosing and mixing colors. The profiles of other artists working with cold wax are especially inspiring! This will be a great addition to every art library.

Enjoyed the storyline. The climactic event was resolved a bit too quickly for my taste. The suspense built nicely but I found myself wanting more at the end. Would love to see more from this author.

Not a Daily Devotional Bible - disappointed

This is advertised as a Daily Devotional Bible, however, it is really just a Bible. There are a few devotional pages but not enough to be considered a Daily Devotional Bible. I did not give it to the child I ordered it for since it is really no different than the NIV Bible she has. So very disappointed! It should just be called a Daily Reading Bible. I expected a devotion after each daily Bible reading but this is not so!

My daughter is 9 but loves reading her Max Lucado Bible. It's more on a pre-teenage to teenage level even though it says Children's. It has a lot of great inserts about topics our young kids are faced with today. My daughter really likes it.

God's word is God's word, and wonderful in and of itself. But this translation makes it easy for me to use with my work with children. And the devotionals within that are sprinkles throughout, make it easy to pull some quick lessons out as well. I got these for my kids in Vacation Bible School. Am looking forward to using them with the kids.

Truely a magical journy !

This book offers a unique combination between the major arcana in the tarot cards, the 12 zodiac signs and the planets. It is amazing to see how the energies of the universe correlate to form a bigger picture than what I've known before. I have previous knowledge of the Tarot cards and basic astrology. I never thought they correlate that well, and through that book I discovered a whole new dimension and depth to tarot and astrology. I'd say this book is good for beginners as well, who want to get to learn the basics of tarot cards, the zodiac signs, the planets and houses. It offers a unique spread for tarot cards and very interesting interpretations. Whether you're familiar or not with tarot cards and astrology, this book can offer a great value and widen your horizons.

I'm currently at Lesson 93 of the workbook and really wish I had this wonderful book when I started the lessons!! I truly am very grateful for Revs Deb and Paul for so generously sharing their journalling with us. What an awesome book!! I'm doing my lesson first, then reading the journals and WOW everything is making so much more sense. Once again, thanks!

Review of A Picture Book of Robert E. Lee

This biography explained the life of Civil War General Robert E. Lee. This book explains his life from birth and his family, to the marriage and his influence in the war. It explained how the general was the leader of the Confederacy. The book also explains the Civil War so that it is easy for the kids to understand. In the book there are also great pictures that mildly display war along with quotes ad images from that time period.
The author did a wonderful job displaying the war and allowing children to understand the concept on a very neutral level. I also liked the outline at the end of the book on his life. It helped children really visualize the order of events.
I like this book for all the above reasons also for the ease of reading. I found it so easy to understand and I think that this book will allow the children to gain interest into biographies and the war. Maybe even lead them into reading all Adler's other biographies.

This is a great book for kids, especially between the ages of 8-11. We have used many of the pictures books for different reports that we have had to do at school. At the end of each book is a time line with all the important dates and events.

Picking Up The Pace

Even with me being out for the summer, I'm having trouble keeping up with all the media that I want to. Comics fall by the wayside. DVDs go unwatched. And books weigh my shelves down. I need to be the Fastest Man Alive to keep up with everything. *sigh* So much good stuff, so little time.

Geoff Johns continues some massive plotting in Flash #3, shaking out more strands of his elaborate story that has ignited Barry Allen's return to his own series. There's a lot going on in this one, as we discovered in the first two issues.

Most intriguing of all is Captain Boomerang's sudden ability to manifest what appear to be black lantern-inspired boomerangs. He's able to form them out of air, which is really cool. If you think about all the old comics, poor old Captain Boomerang had to keep up with his weapons during the heat of battle or he'd soon be fighting with just his fists. Since Digger Harkness is not superhuman in any way, that would make him an appetizer in any real fight with a superhero. I gotta go back and read some old Flash issues to see how he was able to hold his own back then. I seem to recall giant boomerangs and boomerang planes, but those are just warm-up targets. These new energy boomerangs are totally cool.

I like the idea that Barry is looking into a cold case in his job as a forensic scientist at police headquarters, but we're not seeing any real development on that front. It's been left hanging pretty much. I know Barry is on the run from the Rogues of the future and Captain Boomerang is waiting in the wings, but I question whether the subplot should have been introduced if I'm going to be kept waiting.

Geoff Johns has a charming and romantic view of Barry's relationship with Iris. The scenes where the two are together are fantastic. I love the fact that Johns takes times to hook them up in a coffee shop having a normal day before everything breaks loose, and the way Iris agrees to help Barry with his hardship case instead of continuing to promise doom and gloom is a breath of fresh air.

Of course, that also means Iris can go off and get into trouble on her own. Which may be the point.

Francis Manapul's artwork continues to grow on me, and I think a lot of that has to do with the way it just looks "light" on the pages. There aren't many dark tones in all the action. Central City looks well-lighted and roomy, the antithesis of Gotham City, and not nearly as congested and busy as Metropolis. Manapul and Johns are bringing a new city to life as easily as they're renewing this character. Manapul does the action sequences Johns generously gives him all in stride and makes them look good.

Back in the heyday of Barry's original book, the Flash Facts were often interesting and science-based because so many of the writers back then had those interests. I can't help but feel they're just two more pages of story I could have had because a quick trip to Wikipedia would satisfy any curiosity a reader might have about boomerangs, and I got the black lantern affiliation all on my own. However, the emergence of the power does make me wonder if other people are going to start developing the same kind of ability.
