This book is the second in a series that will provide a step in the stairs to English proficiency. It is well laid out and well within reach of the "Step Forward Intro" book. We ordered the workbook as a lower cost solution to providing materials for the students (refugees) as we are a very low budget program.

Best physics text for its level

I was a physics major in college and am now a high school physics teacher. I have taught conceptual, algebra-based high school physics through AP physics. I have read over 10 physics texts cover-to-cover directed at the same level at this one, and this is the best of them, by far! After much research, this is the book I chose to write my advanced high school curriculum around.

This text is for someone with a solid understanding of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. It is not calculus-based. It can be for the more advanced high school student or for the more basic college student. It is VERY well aligned with the AP Physics B curriculum for advanced high school students.

In comparison with other physics texts at the same mathematical level, the reasons I prefer this text over the others are:
- Organization. The topics are laid on in the most straight-forward fashion. There are no surprises or references to material later in the book. It can be taught or learned linearly or out-of-order. It is especially well aligned with the AP Physics B curriculum.
- Explanations. The explanations are clear and use lots of real-life examples to illustrate the topics. As I read this text, I was rarely left wondering what the author was talking about. The writing is not too dense or difficult to understand. It is easy enough to follow for someone learning the topic without getting lost in too much scientific vocabulary.
- Pictures and diagrams. This might not seem like a big deal, but there are more color photographs than most mathematically-based text books. The diagrams are easy to read and explain the concepts discussed in the book. For anyone who is a visual learner, this is very important.
- Practice problems. The problems are a variety of levels, from beginner to advanced, and cover conceptual as well as mathematical problem-soving skills. Most importantly, the practice problems are relevant to the material discussed in the text. There are example problems worked through and solved in the text, as well as practice problems at the back of each chapter.

I also feel compelled to comment on a few of the other reviews complaining that this text doesn't go into enough mathematical complexity for problem solving. Multiple reviews of this text have argued that their professors in college have given more difficult problems for homework and on tests than are covered in this text. I would suggest that perhaps these reviewers are writing more of a review for their professors and their courses than for the text. Perhaps the text isn't quite aligned with what the professors are teaching, or perhaps the professors are challenging their students to go beyond basic concepts on the tests (as I would expect any good teacher to do). But for what it is, and in comparison to other physics texts of the same level, this one is the best you will find!

Decent but not great

I used this book for my first class in college physics. The book is a decent text for learning physics, but I think that several improvements could be made.
This book is Volume 1 of a two volume set. It includes topics about kinematics, Newton's Laws, Energy, Waves and Sound, Fluids, and Thermodynamics, among other topics. To tell the truth, I don't really see the point of splitting the book up into two volumes since most people will take both classes anyway.
First, the good aspects of the book. This text is intended for an algebra-based (no calculus) college physics course. I does do a good job of limiting the mathematical details and instead presenting the underlying physical concept that is to be understood. There are also numerous illustrated examples and practice problems that are very helpful.
Next, the bad aspects of the book. If you are like me and go to a large state university, then it is quite likely that your professor will be a physicist that may be more interested in his or her research than your class. Since real physics majors do not take this class, your professor may not enjoy teaching it. But even if you have the best professor in the world, it is likely that many of the problems in this book are a bit more simplistic than ones that your professor will give on an exam. The book does include simple problems, but does not illustrate how to work out more difficult ones. If you are considering buying the study guide/answer book, don't. It is terrible. It only shows how to do about ten out of the fifty+ questions per chapter. I've had biology answer key books that included more problems.
Basically, this book is not bad for the basic principles but not very good for more advanced ones. How well the course goes depends on the instructor. I'd recommend taking physics first in high school if you are planning on taking it in college because this book is intended for one semester and it covers 18 chapters. It wouldn't hurt to have some prior knowledge of the subject.

A good first course...

I first had physics in college twenty years ago. I was studying (at that time) astronomy and mathematics, so the first college-level physics class I took fully incorporated calculus and advanced mathematics. It was not until recently, as I took a position as tutor at a local community college, that I discovered a rigourous introductory physics text that did not involve calculus (only one semester of calculus is offered at the college, and usually taken concurrently with or after physics).
Walker's text, second edition, is the text we currently use. We offer one semester of physics, so we only get half-way through the text, which seems designed for a two-semester sequence. As the main focus of the college is technical, so the sections on mechanics, thermal physics and electromagnetism are the most essential sections for our degree programmes.
While this text does not assume calculus, it does assume basic trigonometry and analytic geometry. Dealing with angles and graphing are important skills to know here; dealing with vectors is introduced very early in the text, and continues to be very important throughout.
The book is well organised, with chapter summaries, problem-solving techniques summarised at the end of chapter, high concept questions, drawings, photographs, and real-world applications that relate the theory back to actual experience. From the light refraction in raindrops to the workings of the Global Positioning System, students will learn more about the interactions of the world from this text.
The examples follow a format that shows not only the worked solutions, but also the strategies employed to get to the solutions. Problems are pictured (after all, physics deals with real, substantial things), and conceptual considerations are explained (physics is largely story problems that need to be set up properly, after all). The insights and further considerations from the solutions are explored, and other practice problems are suggested (physics is always about going on to the next problem). The examples follow different categories - there are active examples, conceptual checkpoints, and real-world physics exercises.
The book is divided into five primary sections: Mechanics; Thermal Physics; Electromagnetism; Light and Optics; and Modern Physics. Mechanics largely deals with motion, introducing near the end ideas of gravity, sound, fluids and energy. This leads into Thermal Physics, the study of heat, temperature, and the laws of thermodynamics. Electromagnetism looks at electric force, charge, current, potential/potential energy, magnetism and flux. Light and Optics continues this with electromagnetic waves, proceeding to optical instruments and issues of interference and diffraction. The final section on Modern Physics deals with `fun stuff' like relativity, quantum physics, atomic and nuclear physics and radiation.
Like most texts, it comes with various supplements for students and teachers, computer-based and web-based. There are pocket companions and workbooks with solutions that can also be obtained, related to the text.
This is a good text for classroom study, and also a text for independent study. Some of the exercises are difficult to work through, but there are literally dozens (sometimes hundreds) after each chapter, so there is plenty on which to practice, and all the odd-numbered exercises have answers supplied.

The post-cold war years have witnessed an unprecedented involvement by the United Nations in the domestic affairs of states, to end conflicts and rebuild political and administrative institutions. International administrations established by the UN or Western states have exercised extensive executive, legislative, and judicial authority over post-conflict territories to facilitate institution building and provide for interim governance.

This book is a study of the normative framework underlying the international community's statebuilding efforts. Through detailed case studies of policymaking by the international administrations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, and East Timor, based on extensive interviews and work in the administrations, the book examines the nature of this normative framework, and highlights how norms shape the institutional choices of statebuilders, the relationship between international and local actors, and the exit strategies of international administrations. The book argues that a particular conception of sovereignty as responsibility has influenced the efforts of international administrations, and shows that their statebuilding activities are informed by the idea that post-conflict territories need to meet certain normative tests before they are considered legitimate internationally. The restructuring of political and administrative practices to help post-conflict territories to meet these tests creates a sovereignty paradox: international administrations compromise one element of sovereignty--the right to self-government--in order to implement domestic reforms to legitimize the authority of local political institutions, and thus strengthen their sovereignty.

In the light of the governance and development record of the three international administrations, the book assesses the promises and the pathologies of statebuilding, and develops recommendations to improve their performance.

Labor of Love

I have read the book Chain Reaction and I would like to say that I am very proud of my dad who wrote it. I know that for him it is a personal tribute to Rachel, as well as his passion to make a difference. And he is. I know that I am biased in my opinion but I wanted to take the opportunity to say how proud I am of him and I know that if my sister Rachel was here she would say the same thing. My dad has spent countless hours and hours educating himself and others on the issues facing our society today. This book challenges us all to be proactive in reaching out to others.

An inspiring book

About a month ago, I read "The Diary of Anne Frank" and was moved by that young girl's struggle to discover and express her humanity during the Holocaust. In "Chain Reaction", Darrell Scott, the father of Columbine victim Rachel Scott, uses his daughter's journals to describe her similar struggle when faced with the modern teenager's Holocaust of sex, drugs, alcohol, bullying, materialism, broken homes, and violent culture. In particular, he explains the code of ethics she developed (forgiving, loving, helping, leading, and showing mercy for others), which caused her to be a force for good at her high school, reaching out to the most vulnerable students (the disabled, the new kids, and the outcasts) regardless of how it might affect her popularity. Although this code grew from Rachel's deep Christian faith, the book is nonsectarian and emphasizes the universality of her everyday successes and failures at trying to figure out what the right thing to do is and then have the courage to do it. The book also points out that Rachel was no saint and no namby-pamby, cloyingly sweet idealist--just an average teenager whose numerous small, simple acts of kindness had a huge impact on those around her. In fact, this is the meaning of the book's title. In an essay written a month before her death, Rachel wrote, "I have a theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same." Ironically, a month before his death, killer Eric Harris made a video saying he also wanted to "get a chain reaction going," only his, of course, was one of violence and hatred. As we all know, on April 20, 1999, Eric and his friend Dylan Klebold won the first battle, brutally murdering Rachel and 12 others. This book, and the speeches he gives all over the world, are Darrell Scott's attempt to make sure Rachel wins the war, namely, by telling her story and encouraging others to follow her example and start a chain reaction of kindness in their families, their schools, and their communities. I strongly recommend this book, especially to high school students, parents, and teachers--to students, so they can understand the terrible pain caused by bullying, and to parents and teachers, so they can begin to recognize and address the alienation and spiritual vacuum so many high school kids feel today.

The truth will set you free

Right after the Bible, this book should be required reading for every person on the planet. The concepts in this book are so simple to grasp but for whatever reason difficult to put into practice for most of us these days. It will have a positive impact on anyone who reads it.
This book is all about the golden rule. If everyone took this approach, there would be a lot less time for hate and anger and more time for thinking about what really matters. Jesus said, "For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" I think that it is far easier to love than to hate..
Thank you again Mr. Scott for a thought provoking book. May God's grace continue to work through you and your familiy.
