About the Author
James Turk and John Rubino are the co-authors of The Coming Collapse of the Dollar and How To Profit From It: Make a Fortune by Investing in Gold and Other Hard Assets (Doubleday, 2004). James Turk is the founder and a director of GoldMoney, a Jersey, Channel Islands company and a leader in online gold trading. He is also a director of the GoldMoney Foundation, a not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to providing information on sound money. After beginning his business career with The Chase Manhattan Bank (now JP Morgan Chase), he went onto manage the Commodity Department of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, that country’s sovereign wealth fund. He is the author of several monographs and numerous articles on money and banking. He and his wife live in London, England. John Rubino runs DollarCollapse.com, a popular financial website, and contributes regularly to CFA Magazine. Conversational tone, but packed with information

A very readable book, especially considering how much material it covers.

The book is divided into four parts. Part I explains what a precarious situation the Western financial world is really in, due to “papering over” crisis after crisis with increasing amounts of debt and fiat currency, yet without actually fixing anything. If you’re fairly new to this, Part I will alert you to some major risks (but in plain, rather than alarmist, language). If you’re already somewhat worried, you’ll wish you could make your friends and relatives sit down and read this section, because it lays out the dangers nicely.

Part II explains some of the consequences of all this unfettered debt and currency creation, which go beyond what’s traditionally thought of as economics. There’s the burden of inflation (largely hidden and denied), and the perils of rising interest rates, both of which are well described. But it also discusses increased corruption, an ever-expanding (because easily funded) military-surveillance state, manipulated markets and a resultant loss of trust, and a level of societal complexity which is not sustainable and will end unpredictably (but badly). That’s just a partial list. People who think they’re not interested in economics might be a lot more interested if they understood how “easy money” plays into many of the issues they care about.

Part III highlights some of the features of our slightly bizarre financial system, necessary knowledge for understanding how to protect oneself. It covers open secrets which are easily understood but which much of the public is woefully unaware of: the way fractional reserve banking actually works, the amount of power unelected central bankers wield, and why inflation is a hidden tax that people don’t realize they’re paying. Understanding the unfairness of the financial system makes you want to distance yourself from it, which leads to Part IV, the “what you can do to prepare” section.

Part IV involves, in part, bullish arguments for gold and silver, and there might be some skeptics who’ve grown impatient with precious metals. If you’re in that crowd, this part of the book is an excellent reminder of what the fundamentals really are, which it might be helpful to revisit. The impatient would also benefit from reading the introduction to the book, which gives a good explanation for why the financial breakdown that history dictates has not happened yet.

It should be a useful book for people at different levels of knowledge, from someone just learning about money & economics to someone who knows a lot, but might love to have some clearly outlined talking points to bring to friends and relatives.

A good book, unusually well written, but little new helpful advice

I'm contributing this because I have benefitted a great deal from other people's book reviews. This is an extremely well written discussion concerning the historical and well as current events in the financial and monetary world. Most of this was in the last book, and also available on the internet. However, it all becomes a very academic exercise if there is no good solution. The disappointing part is that there is precious little usable new information concerning what a person can do to protect themselves. I would have hoped at this late date we would have more concrete guidance on how to mitigate the possible damage. There are too many authors that consider the solution to a risky situation to be doing something that is even more risky to counter it. Great, if your timing is perfect. But if you are that good at timing markets, you are probably going to do OK anyway. The other thing is while I think that you can have somewhat of a handle on the economic situation the political / legal situation is the wild card and we need to know more about this factor. Finally, there is the time factor. Yes, the sun will eventually go supernova, but it may not do that for quite a while, if you get my drift. Meanwhile, life happens. In particular a more balanced view to the investing approaches might be useful, including more of a discussion concerning possible disadvantages.

I would recommend the book to anyone who is not yet familiar with this subject, or who hasn't read the previous book. It might make a good gift.

Enlightening with a leap to the fanciful

I greatly enjoyed the book. It was well written, entertaining, informative and thought provoking...but I have a hard time believing the authors' vision of the next ten years.

Yes we are in debt up to our eyeballs, yes we are printing money like mad, yes governments lie about statistics and other things...but I'm not sure it is going to lead to the crack-up boom as described and I'm not sure catastrophic collapse is a possibility within the next few years or so.

The chapter on how the most basic US government statistics of unemployment and inflation were understated was fascinating. I knew about them, but the implications were not clear until this book.

The segment on how the gold market was manipulated was well written and I had never heard of it until this book, frankly. That was eye opening.

Fractional reserved banking was a mortal sin in this book as was central banking in general. Von Mises, Rothbard, Ron Paul et al were weaved throughout the pages. I don't quite buy into their black and white view of the world. Yes I want smaller and more efficient government and yes I want the Constitution to drive many decisions politically. But the Constitution was made by men and wasn't perfect (remember 3/5ths).

That said, when you predict the end of an era---in this case a dollar denominated one---there are times when I thought the authors went overboard. The Epilogue reads like an Ayn Rand novel to me. No, I don't think precious metals will lead us to smaller banks and the end of our military empire.

Interestingly, the main purpose of the book was to provide investment advice. All the material discussed above was primer for understanding how to get wealthy during the coming collapse of the dollar. Unload your bonds, sell volatility, selectively short the market and of course buy gold and silver. Maybe, but I remain unconvinced.

I recommend the book, but you determine for yourself whether you want to go their route or not.

A Worthy Addition to the Beranbaum Baking Bible Canon

First of all, I am a seasoned amateur baker, not a professional pastry chef. And as much as I cook a lot -- and all kinds of things from low carb to vegan to Paleo and whatever traditional American cooking looks like -- my real love is to bake. And I especially love to bake completely from scratch where I need to buy some special, good quality ingredients and carve out a few hours or maybe over a couple days to savor the process.

For those of you, who like me, love to bake and aren't afraid to jump into detailed recipes that require some technique, then Rose Beranbaum's baking books are for you. "The Baking Bible" is the follow up to her last baking gem "Rose's Heavenly Cakes" (and her other timeless classics like "The Cake Bible" and "The Bread Bible "). The writing and the layout I loved with Heavenly Cakes is still intact and improved with the addition of specific helps called "GOLDEN RULES," "SPECIAL TIPS," and "TROUBLESHOOTING."

Some Heavenly Cakes recipes reappear in a new form such as the "White Chocolate Caramel Buttercream" -- a "White Chocolate Lemon Buttercream" redux that I guarantee you will love (the original version is my #1 all-time favorite cake frosting EVER). The Red Rose Cake is a new version of the previous Rose Red Velvet Cake in a new shape of a 3-D rose instead of the heart.

While I admit I am focused on cake so far, "The Baking Bible" includes Beranbaum's best to date pies, pastries, tarts, cookies, candy, bread and preserves. Although the title says "bible," this isn't intended to be an exhaustive collection of baking recipes, but rather updated winners and the best recipes and techniques one could expect from the writer of some of the best-loved and award-winning baking books we'll cook from for years to come. Do plan to spend some time reading through the book and planning some happy hours baking before you jump in. It is quite enjoyable to read through all the tips, instruction and see the possibilities before ever hitting the kitchen.

Can't Be Improved Upon

I might have died and gone to Heaven. Dorie Greenspan and Rose Levy Beranbaum both released baking books this fall. Forget Christmas. I have everything I need to be happy for the rest of the year.

The Baking Bible is a massive anthology of recipes to satisfy your baking needs. It runs the gamut from cakes to yeast breads and hits almost everything in between. This is an impressive collection of recipes that you will use for a long time. One of Rose's birthday cakes as well as her prosciutto loaf from her bread cookbook have been favorites in my home for over ten years now. The book will stay open to cook from, without the aid of a cookbook stand, from the first page to the last. The only downside to this (and it is my ONLY criticism of the book) is that this type of sewn binding is likely to cause you to have pages fall out later if you use the book often (and you will).

The chapters are divided as follows: cakes; pies, tarts and other pastries; cookies and candy; and breads and yeast pastries. Each chapter is further subdivided into specific categories. For example, the cakes chapter is subdivided into butter and oil cakes, cupcakes, sponge cakes, and cheesecakes. The book opens with Rose's Golden Rules of Baking. Then each individual chapter has a lengthy introduction that helps the cook troubleshoot common baking problems and includes more "golden rules" for being a successful cake baker, pie baker, etc. If you know Rose's recipes, you know she is a stickler for weights, measurements, and following directions. Each recipe begins with a chart that clearly delineates measurements for volume and weight. In many instances there will not be a listing for volume as weight (which is included in ounces as well as grams) is more accurate.

I am pleased to say that the book is as lovely as it is useful. There isn't a photograph for each recipe, but the photographs that are included are absolutely gorgeous. Most of the recipe is printed in black, but the headings are done in shades of burgundy that I didn't have any trouble reading. There are asides called "Highlights for Success" through many of the recipes that give you additional information to make your recipe a smash hit. I also add that the index is also problem free. It was done with a lot of thought in order to maximize usefulness.

I would like to recommend this book to everyone, and for the most part, I do. I recommend to beginners with caution. I was a young bride with no cooking experience when I purchased The Cake Bible and The Bread Bible. I had no trouble because the author is so specific in her directions. However, novices should be able to follow multiple, detailed steps and use their five senses plus be able to make judgment calls regarding a recipe. If you are a moderate level or advanced baker, you will be pleased with this newest addition to the Beranbaum library and probably won't be able to put the book down for more than five minutes at the time.

The ingredients and basic recipes section at the end of the book will demystify basics such as making chocolate curls, clarifying butter, and making ganache and whipped cream as well as lending Rose's personal insights on what ingredients to buy. I feel that this book is the home equivalent of a culinary school course in baking. You will love the appendix that lists quick and easy recipes as well as recipes that are flourless, mostly flourless, as well as lactose free. If you have egg issues, the author lists which recipes include only yolks or whites. She bends over backwards to make this book easy to use!

But enough of my detailed book tour, you want to hear about recipes! I took a change of pace from the usual cakes and loaves for my initial foray into this impressive book and went with the French toast. It was magnificent, so good that I felt it didn't even need the additional suggested décor of powdered sugar or maple syrup.

Don't hesitate to add this book to your library. If you are new to Rose Levy Beranbaum, know that if you follow her directions to the letter you will have baked goods that taste as though they couldn't possibly be made by human hands. The precise directions are absolutely worth it!

Flawless recipes, perfectly written and explained

The recipes here are flawless, and Rose makes sure of it by including the measurements by weight and volume. Most of these recipes are projects, the kind of fun, day-long adventures you might devote a Saturday to. This is definitely not a book for quick recipes you can whip up on a whim, and almost every main recipe comprises multiple sub-recipes (the cake layers, the jam filling, the ganache, the buttercream the ganache is whipped into, the decoration, etc). However, the end result is outrageously good. I made her babka with an almond-cream cheese and apricot jam filling, and I think I may have actually exclaimed "Oh my god" in between chews. The apple and sour cream coffee cake is fabulous as well. The pictures are beautiful, but they don't necessarily accompany every recipe.

If you're someone who already loves to bake, this is a wonderful book to add to your collection, and the recipes are worth the time and effort! If you're a novice baker or someone disinterested in more complicated recipes, this may not be the best book for you.

About the Author
Edwin H. Friedman (1932-1996), a family therapist and ordained rabbi, was born in New York City and worked for more than 35 years in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Friedman brought his unique blend of systems thinking, motivational style, and common sense to his highly regarded work as a consultant and leadership trainer to diverse professional and government organizations.

A Brilliant Work

Ed Friedman provided his readers and students with more than information about the human condition. He has given them a way to think, not just what to think. This book of fables, as the study booklet that accompanies it makes clear, is about life questions. A great deal of what one can know about life and self depends upon (a) where one stands when asking questions, and (b) the clarity and orientation of one's questions. The greatness of Ed Friedman is the clarity with which he has engaged the world. His "Generation to Generation" is a powerfully clear treatise on self and systems that has had a profound effect on thousands. I am given to understand that his daughter is arranging for editing and publishing "A Failure of Nerve" (available since 1999 only as a bound manuscript, loosely edited). Ed Friedman learned systems theory from Msurray Bowen (1913-1990), and his variant of Bowen Theory remains one of the clearest and most compelling expositions of the power of Bowen's work. "Friedman's Fables" is a testament to what can be done with Bowen when one thinks about the human condition with freedom and creativity, informed by the discipline of the most mature theory of human functioning today.

For the love of calling a plant by it's real name

I have guarded a 1950's publication of this book for many many years and stumbled across this new 2010 republication. As an avid gardener and and lover of plants, it's important to ask the nursery for the correct plant. (how many varieties of oak trees are there?) If I kill the pronunciation, the nurserymen squint up their eyes or laugh before asking if I'd like to follow them and point it out, if I can. If I pronounce it correctly they're impressed and I get great service as well as a terrific plant.

The pronouncing dictionary was great, a little pricy for its size, but great non the less.
Also is an easy size to carry with you to pronounce correctly the botanical names when you do not have a romance language background. It was a good purchase.

Dear Reader,

One morning, while in the car with my husband and our young sons, an intriguing song came on the radio. I had never heard it before, but I was instantly transfixed by the melody, and the singer's haunting voice. I turned to my husband, who was driving: "This is a beautiful song!" I exclaimed. "Do you know it?" He shook his head. I glanced at the radio, and the screen read, "Blackberry Winter by Hilary Kole." The title made my heart flutter. As a lifelong Northwesterner, blackberries are special to me. I get nostalgic when I think about the after-dinner walks I took with my parents and siblings during the summers of my childhood. We'd all take bowls and tromp through the woods near our home, scouting for blackberries. My sister and I would eat the majority of them, and the rest would find their way into one of mom's famous pies or cobblers. Summer just wasn't summer without berry-stained fingers.

That day in the car, I pulled out my phone (which, ahem, happens to be a Blackberry), and emailed myself the name of the song and its artist. I wanted to read the lyrics, but mostly, I wanted to know the origins of the title. What is a blackberry winter? Later, at home, I sat down at my desk to do some research. I learned that the term is old-fashioned weather jargon for a late-season cold snap--think of plunging temperatures and snowfall in May, just when the delicate white flowers are beginning to appear on the blackberry vines.

I couldn't get the words "blackberry winter" out of my head, and that night, I began to sketch out the concept for this novel. The story came to me quickly and vividly: Vera and Daniel and the little apartment they shared in the 1930s; his beloved teddy bear, lying face-down in the cold snow; Claire and her curious reporter's mind and her own deep pain and grief; snowflakes falling on the spring cherry blossoms.
�
For the next many months, I lived and breathed Blackberry Winter. At the heart of this story, for me, were the raw emotions of motherhood. I began writing the novel when I was pregnant with my third son, and I channeled Vera and Claire's pain and often-heartbreaking experiences. I thought a lot about how it would feel to lose a child, and what I would do.

Then, in a heartbreaking turn of events, shortly before I finished the book, one of my dearest friends, Wendi Parriera, lost her two-year-old son to a rare form of brain cancer. It broke my heart to watch her say goodbye to her precious boy, and I wept with her on the phone as she held her son against her chest in the final hours of his life. But, I also saw her strength, and the light in her eye--the one that told me how thankful she is to have been the mother of this beautiful child, and how excited she is to know, with certainty, that she'll be seeing him again, in heaven. Wendi reminds me, always, that motherhood--life--no matter how short, is a gift.

While my characters' challenges are great and their stories tragic, like my dear friend, I like to think that they found their own sense of peace and truth--swirling in a late-season snowstorm and hidden amongst the protective thorns of the blackberry vines.

I couldn't read it fast enough!

A crazy snowstorm blankets Seattle in May, but it's not the first time. A fluke snowstorm fell in May of 1933 too and the editor of The Herald wants Claire Aldridge to write a feature article about the May storms--about Blackberry Winter.

During Claire's research of the storm of '33, she finds a newspaper article about Vera and her three year old son who went missing. Vera was a young maid at a high end hotel and had left her son home alone at night while she worked. Authorities believed her three year old, Daniel, ran away during the snowstorm. Claire doesn't believe it for a minute and wonders what happened to Daniel? Were mother and son ever reunited?

Claire's own life is in shambles, but this story seems to ignite a fire in her she thought was gone. Can she solve the mystery? Can there be a happily ever after? Can Claire find her way again?
Once again Sarah Jio proves she has the amazing ability to transport her readers into not one, but two stories in two different times.

I fell in love with poor Vera. A young mother alone in the world struggling to make ends meet. As I read along, I was cheering Claire on wanting her to hurry and solve the mystery of Daniel. I wanted a happy reunion! It wasn't just me who wanted the mystery solved, but it was as if Mother Nature herself was demanding resolution with the return of the Blackberry Winter.

Claire too has suffered a devastating loss. Her marriage is on the brink. For the first time in a long while, Emily begins to come alive but it just might be too late for her old life.
If you read Sarah's first book The Violets of March, you'll be as thrilled as I was to learn Emily and Jackson make an appearance in Blackberry Winter.

While reading, I had numerous "goosebump" moments! Love those. By the end of Blackberry Winter I wasn't crying...I was sobbing. I was truly touched. Not only is Blackberry Winter my new favorite book by Sarah Jio, it's my new all time favorite book. I love how I felt so connected to these characters. I really can't imagine someone not loving this book. I wish I didn't have so many other books to read, because I want to sit down and read it again.

PAST CONNECTIONS REVEALED

Seattle is the setting for Blackberry Winter: A Novel, the story of two women, living many years apart, linked by an event. A late winter snow storm in May 1933 and again on the same date nearly eighty years later.

We open with Vera Ray's story on a night she has to go to work, leaving her three-year-old son Daniel alone. And then we feel her pain and loss when she returns after her shift to find her son missing, on that day of the memorable snow storm.

Flash forward to present day Seattle and a young reporter named Claire Aldridge, who must write a feature story on the storm and the amazing coincidental event that occurred in 1933.

But Claire's life has been unraveling since the previous year when her child was stillborn after a tragic accident. Her marriage to Evan Kensington, from one of the richest families in Seattle, seems to be falling apart, too. She isn't too keen on this story, but suddenly, as she begins to research the events and as the threads start coming together, she is definitely invested in it.

Narrated by the two women, we gradually see their stories unfold. Slowly, with a remarkably intense pace, we come to wonder about the strange connections between them that are gradually revealed. What happened to little Daniel Ray, and who has tried to bury the evidence? What happened to Vera so inexplicably, and why was that story also buried? Will Claire finally unearth the secrets of the past and find resolution for her own story?

Sarah Jio has the uncanny ability for drawing the reader into the characters' worlds and making the reader care deeply for what is happening to them. We become invested in their stories, even as our minds leap ahead to conjure up our own hopes for them. Another winning tale from a talented storyteller, I give this one five stars and recommend it for all Jio fans, as well as anyone who enjoys a good suspense tale.

Lighter than expected

Blackberry Winter: A Novel is the first book I have read by Sarah Jio and I selected it for my February book group read based upon the wonderful things I have heard about her work.

The novel is set in Seattle and alternates between the years 1933 and 2010. In May of 2010, an unusual snowfall hits Seattle and newspaper journalist Claire Aldridge is assigned the story of writing about a similar snowfall that hit in 1933. Claire struggles with how to make it interesting and stumbles across the story of a three-year-old boy that disappears into that snowstorm and is never heard from again. The reader follows the story of what happened to the boy as well as what is happening to Claire and her husband in current time after a catastrophic event shakes their marriage.

I was intrigued by the premise and very eager to read the novel. I love books that are historical in nature and have intertwining storylines with the present. While the book was readable, it didn't live up to its potential in my opinion. While this had the possibility of being literary fiction, it ended up being a more light, beach-type read with implausible actions taken on the part of the characters that required non-critical thinking to be enjoyed. After I read the book, I looked at the other reviews here on Amazon and have to say that the January 31, 2013 review by Maryd523 pretty much nailed it on the head. I didn't feel as strongly about the book (I thought it was fine for what it ended up being) but she articulates so well where the novel fell short. The review does contain spoilers so be careful about reading it until after you have finished the book or it will ruin it for you.

Bottom line: Perfectly adequate light read but not the great novel it had the potential to be.

I like it as much as I could like a book ...

I mean...I like it as much as I could like a book about research design in psychology.......it's weirdly nerdily funny sometimes though? It isn't the worst research methods textbook I've ever read, I could actually stay awake while reading entire chapters which are full of relevant info.

Practical information for researchers

I've used Kazdin's book for several years now in planning my own research in the area of developmental psychopathology. I can see why others have criticized the book as being long-winded and somewhat dry - I wouldn't recommend reading the book cover-to-cover. However, the book is filled with practical advice on how to design research studies in the areas of clinical or abnormal psychology. I especially like Kazdin's discussion of the threats to internal and external validity that commonly plague research. I'd recommend this book as a "handbook" for researchers to reference when they need to look up specific topics or to plan a new project.
