A Needed Text for Today's Preservice Teachers

If you are an aspiring teacher, a teacher trainer, or an experienced classroom teacher, you will find Dr. Frank's presentation both highly informative and motivating. Dr. Frank successfully takes the reader into a sense of "being there" while opening our eyes to the reality of personal biases. A helpful and friendly feature about her style is her accessibility, i.e., I felt that Dr. Frank was on hand to offer clarification and annotated insights as a means to better equip me in my own observation.

Suprisingly great

All Meg Stiles wants is a happy life for her little son Barney and herself. But she knows that her happiness is a fragile little thing. Because her son's father is not her partner Christian but her former lover Johnny Jefferson, and both don't no anything about it. Johnny, a famous rockstar, broke Meg's heart once and she is not willing to give him a second chance, but when he realizes that he has a son everything changes and Meg has to decide how to go on.
How will Meg's future look like and will she give love a second chance?

This is going to be a rather weird review. Because at first I have to tell you why I expected to not love the book and explain the reason why I picked it up.
So far I read "Chasing Daisy and "Johnny be good" (the prequel to "Baby be mine") by Paige Toon and both books were just ok for me. I enjoyed Paige Toon's engaging writing style but I had trouble with the female main character in "Chasing Daisy". I'm just not a big fan of a heroine who has unprotected sex with someone who's in a relationship. I was also not a big fan of Johnny in "Johnny be good" and couldn't understand the adoration he got from other readers. But still I wanted to know what would happen to Meg and Johnny and if they would end up together. I couldn't stop this weird fascination from growing stronger and stronger, so I bought "Baby be mine" when I saw a good deal for it online.

So I started this book with the conviction that it would be an ok book but nothing great. However Paige Toon suprised me with this book. She made Meg and especially Johnny more likable and gave them more depth. I know that many readers had no trouble with these things in "Johnny be good" but for me it was a big issue. At the end of this book I even liked Johnny a little bit and was happy that he was happy. But to be honest I still think that the best thing about Johnny is his huge fortune (and yes, I know that this doesn't sound nice). I also liked Meg more in this book because she was a good mother to Barney and always tried to do what was best for him.

I also enjoyed that Paige Toon changed the characters a bit but not too much, they were still themselves with their countless flaws and issues. The little changes made my reading experience so much better than I expected it to be. The author's writing style was once again very entertaining and made me smile & laugh a lot. I furthermore liked that the author created very interesting and mostly likable secondary characters. Reading about Meg's friends (old and new) was one of my highlights of the book.

I don't want to give away too much about what happens between Meg, Christian and Johnny. However in my opinion there was always only one possible end for this book, so the ending was absolutly no suprise. Some might say that the end was too perfect, too harmonic and too happy but for me it fit to the story. Sometimes overly sweet and mushy happy endings just fit.

Some things in "Baby be mine" were of course over the top and very dramatic, but that's something I expected and that fit to Johnny's life. Maybe I was ok with the drama because I was used to it after reading "Johnny be good".

Because I devoured this book and was very entertained by it I'm even excited for the next book by Paige Toon. I would love to read more about Joseph, who's an upcoming actor and someone Meg meets in Hollywood.

I'm not a big fan of the cover. The woman doesn't fit to how Meg is described and the cover looks generic. I love the covers for the other books by Paige Toon but this one is nothing special.

This book has surprised me a lot and in a very positive way. I devoured it and loved reading about the new developments in Meg, Christian and Johnny's life.

LOVED this follow up

I had been dying to know what happened between Meg and Johnny ever since finishing Johnny Be Good. I even purchased Chasing Daisy, knowing that Toon is famous for giving a little follow up of the characters from the previous book. I was not disappointed at all in this purchase. Love the story and thought it was a wonderful follow up to Johnny. I highly recommend this read to any fan of Toon. I must also say, that even though this is a follow up (and you are totally missing out if you don't read Johnny first), that this novel could technically be a stand alone, you will just be missing so much of the story though.

Loved it!

As you may or may not know I really love Paige Toon's work, I love her addictive style of writing and fun sense of humour that always shines through in her books. I picked this book up on my travels and didn't realise that Johnny Be Good should actually be read first (unfortunately I don't have this book in my `To Read' pile). Usually I wouldn't dream of not reading books in order but I felt like being daring for a change (as daring as this bookworm can get) and I decided to read it anyway.

I'm pleased to say that it didn't matter at all that I hadn't read Johnny Be Good first, this book worked well as a standalone read but now I definitely want to find out exactly what happened in Meg and Johnny's past, although not knowing certainly didn't affect my enjoyment of this book.

The prologue really set the scene and made me want to know more, I was playing out all sorts of scenarios in my head just from this one page so I couldn't wait to get stuck in.

Meg was a very confused character, she didn't seem to know what she really wanted out of life and to be honest she was making a bit of a mess of things. I'm not comfortable with people who lie and lying seemed to be a big part of Meg's life so I did find parts of this book difficult to read.

All of the characters were very likeable, Dana being the only exception, and I loved the descriptions of France and LA because it made me feel like I was there with them (I wish)!

A tragedy marked a significant discovery in the book and from then on everything in Meg's life changed, I felt so sad for all those involved and desperately wanted everything to turn out for the best.

All the scenarios that had played out in my head never happened and I enjoyed the fact that I couldn't figure out what was coming next. The ending was great and left me with a big smile on my face.

This is another hit from Paige Toon, an exciting page-turner that I read in less than a day.

Unique contribution to the study of nationalism

This book has already been criticized as a blatant promotion of the "primordialist" view of nations and nationalism, i.e. the claim that nations have existed as one of the prime forms of human (self-) identification and organization since time immemorial. Such criticisms are, I think, not entirely on the mark. What Hastings does in this book more than anything else is challenge the incredibly structural/functionalist view that nations and nationalism are simply a by-product of industrialization and the increasingly complex division of labor in human societies-a model constructed and most extensively explained by Ernest Gellner. While useful and interesting, Gellner's model often has to bend and fold historical facts to make them "fit." In fact, Hastings takes Gellner's rigid model and applies it to early medieval England, where shows that according to Gellner's criteria, one can even speak of a nascent English nation in the era of the Venerable Bede and King Alfred. The most important point Hastings makes is to fault the strictly modern view of national development as overly simplistic. Nation formation and national identity are actually long-term historical processes which, although closely tied to industrialization and modernization, were and are not strictly bound to the latter nor always dependent on them. Although I don't necessarily agree with all of Hastings' conclusions, nor even his analytical methods, I think this is a very interesting and useful contribution to the scholarly literature on nationalism.

Nations and Nationalism Emerged Long Before the Enlightenment. Clergy Unite Peasants and Landlords in National Consciousness

This book is written to counter the “modernist” interpretation of nations as exemplified by Eric Hobsbawm, Benedict Anderson, and Ernest Geller. The author begins with medieval Europe. However, time and time again, author Adrian Hastings returns to ancient Israel as an example of a nation. (p. 3, 18, 186).

WHAT DO THE TERMS MEAN?

To avoid ambiguity, Hastings defines his terms as follows (p. 3)(direct quotes):

An ethnicity is a group of people with a shared cultural identity and spoken language…

A nation is a far more self-conscious community than an ethnicity. Formed from one or more ethnicities, and normally identified by a literature of its own, it possesses or claim the right to political identity and autonomy as a people, together with the control of specific territory, comparable to that of biblical Israel and of other independent entities in a world thought of as one of nation-states.

A nation-state is a state which identifies itself in terms of one specific nation whose people are not seen simply as “subjects” of the sovereign but as a horizontally bonded society to whom the state in a sense belongs. [See also p. 25].

PEASANTS WERE, OR COULD BE, NATIONALLY CONSCIOUS

Author Adrian Hastings rejects the Marxist argument, as held by Eric Hobsbawm, which would have us believe that peasants would not identify with a “country”, as their chief discontent was with the landlords. Hastings points out that one can be discontented with rulers, yet still identify with the nation. He also points to the crucial role of the clergy in bringing together the peasants and landlords into a sense of shared local, provincial, and national identity. (p. 192).

EUROPEAN NATIONS

Perhaps this book is a bit too Anglocentric. Hastings claims to find England a nation and nation-state, in essentially the modern sense, as early as the 10th century. (pp. 4-5. See also p. 56, 207).

Hastings also rejects the notion that Germany and Italy, each having become united into single nations only in the 19th century, are thereby new nations. Thus, already by medieval times, the German people had political consciousness as a single entity (p. 106), and the REGNUM TEUTONICUM meant that the Germans understood themselves as a community of law, custom and kinship before even their identification with the Holy Roman Empire in the fourteenth century. (p. 107). In like manner, an Italian national identity was already recognized in the fifteenth century. (p. 116).

MODERN AFRICAN NATIONS

The author rejects the argument that different tribal or ethnic identities were the products of European colonial rule. (p. 149). In addition, the advent of literacy did not manufacture ethnic identities among the locals. It only made the differences, which were pre-existing, less fluid and more canonical. (p. 157).

Finally, Hastings concludes that, “African nationalism, I am suggesting, has hardly existed except where it has been ethnically based, linguistically held together, and biblically watered.” (p. 163).
