About the Author
Susie Vaughan lives in Gwent, South Wales. She trained and worked as a journalist, then made her first basket with willow shoots from a fallen tree, following instructions from a magazine. She later took classes and became an expert, specializing in hedgerow baskets, using material found in urban areas as well as in the countryside. She gathers material from local hedges, woods and gardens. She gives talks and demonstrations and her work has been widely exhibited.

Where do baskets come from?

Vaughan's book emphasizes collecting natural materials for basketry, with neat color pictures of appropriate vegetation. The last part of the book explains simple basket-making. Great enthusiasm builder and very useful guide for collecting. If you want more on weaving patterns as well as materials, look at Jensen's book "Baskets from Nature's Bounty."

Best book for baskets from wild material

The book is wonderful: written in a very clear language with simple to follow instructions, color figures worth thousands of words and a really inspiring photo gallery. The book is purposed for beginner-basketmakers that will gather material by themselves. Contains an extensive list of plants and how they can be used. In this point I find it more useful than Elizabeth Jensen's "Baskets from Nature's Bounty" - the wicker part.

I bought the book 8 months ago, made my first baskets thanks to it, and got enthusiasm for many more.

As my baskets are not yet perfect, at first I bought some more basket books to find out the basketmaking tricks but the other books did not teach me much more. In fact I soon got lost in wordiness and all I had to do is to reread some parts of "Handmade Baskets" and take a quick look at its pictures to find out what I did wrong. Neither of the other books was that clear.

Now when I'm going through it once again I wish it was not only 80 pages because I want more:-)

Not what I was expecting

This of course is my problem. I had assumed from the title that it would use a lot of found materials and less common weaving materials. I was hoping for something that used grasses, herbs and other materials not the usual woody hard form materials. However it sticks with the traditional. Nevertheless it is a good basic book for someone beginning weaving.

It is written by 'people who are interested & involved in wine from both an academic & business perspective'..... These contributors are drawn from six countries, in addition to England. Hence this is a complex blend with a strong international flavour. Their chosen blend is very diverse & ought to contain something for everyone with an interest in this field. The book is clearly laid out & contains an interesting mixture of illustrations, figures, tables & other statistical data.

Its international credentials are obvious & it does provide a solid introduction to a diverse subject. The contributions are both serious & relevant. They cover both academic & practical aspects of the field. It is a work that deserves to be consumed whilst young because of its relevance to a rapidly growing market.

Lack of integration lets potentially useful book down

The editors make a great case for the development of wine tourism strategies at the winery, industry, regional and country level. In the introduction the authors note the importance of wine tourism for increasing consumer exposure to wine, building brand awareness, increased margins, a source of marketing intelligence and providing a means of educating consumers about wine. The authors also highlight the role of wine related tourism has played in introducing new consumers to `Old' and `New' world wine regions, and also note its role in building (or re-building) regional identity in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. This last point is particularly important given the recent findings by Areni, Duhan, and Keicker (1999) who found that an unknown or poorly viewed region could not effectively market itself using traditional point-of-sale or advertising strategies. The authors of the book provide a way out for a new or struggling wine region by arguing that wine tourism may provide a means by which consumers can reduce the risk of purchasing an unknown wine. Importantly, they note that the production of quality wine is still critical in winning over the consumer and that tourism activities will not provide a panacea for regions with unknown or poor reputations.
The book's greatest asset (and weakness) is it diversity. Combining the experiences of researchers from Australia, Canada, England, France, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA, the reader is treated to a global overview of wine tourism and the approaches different regions and countries have taken to developing wine tourism strategies. From case studies of regions / countries such as Texas, Napa Valley, Australia, France, and South Africa, to broader topics such as consumer behavior, network development, policy issues and product development, the book provides the reader with an in-depth introduction to the field of wine tourism.
Frochot's chapter on French wine tourism highlights the critical role of other tourism products such as history, environment, food, and culture and makes the important point that few people visit a wine region primarily or just to taste wine. Regions attract people by providing a range of experiences that add up to a `total service offering' (Gronroos, 1996). This chapter has implications for New World regions that may not be able to offer this level of experience. Dodd's chapter on increasing cellar door sales makes links with broader tourism and marketing literature in order to explain what influences cellar door visitors to purchase wine both during and after their visit. The strength of Dodd's approach is that by combining his own research with the wider literature to interpret his data. In doing so he highlights the importance of repeat visits, loyal customers and word-of-mouth referrals to a winery and region.
The chapter by Hall et al on regional development argues for the development of networks between wineries, tourism organizations, and other tourism attractions such as food producers and local government. It is a pity that they did not explore the mechanisms by which these networks could be formed in more detail. Like Dodd and Frochot, the importance of relationship marketing strategies that highlight the need to form alliances in order to provide customers with a total experience is apparent (although not made by the authors). The authors make a case for government to become more proactive in forming networks and providing research and information to the wineries on the benefits of wine tourism. However, this idea needs a more critical approach. For example early on in the book the same authors note that government has played a relatively minor role in New Zealand (compared to Australia) yet New Zealand has developed a number of successful wine tourism routes. The Milawa gourmet food route in Australia was also developed without significant help from government. In this case the vision and drive of Brown Brothers CEO Ross Brown has seen it become a reality. Finally the chapter on New Zealand wine tourism provides a good analysis of the consumer profiles of New Zealand visitors, although it is a pity that these were not integrated more closely with the chapter by Dodd as well as literature on consumer behavior and marketing.
Any book that contains a diverse range of chapters is always going to suffer from a lack of direction and cohesiveness. Whilst the diversity is a strength, it is also a weakness. The case studies are not fully integrated with the chapters on more general marketing and strategy issues (with the exception of Dodd), nor is the role of the cases made clear. The quality of the case studies also varies from the depth and integration of Dodd and Frochot to the less developed chapters on South Africa and a chapter on Vasse Felix that appears to be little more than an advertisement for the winery (although it had the potential to be so much more). The chapters also need to have a summary that highlights major points and lessons for practitioners. A final integrating chapter would also have been useful. Whilst the final chapter attempts to do so, I believe another chapter bringing together the various experiences around the world and drawing out key lessons would have been a valuable end to this book. The current structure suggests that the book is perhaps intended for an academic audience as opposed to a practitioner one (although I believe that this was not the intention). This book also suggests that the field is emerging as one worthy of study and as such it needs to find some direction. One way of doing this would be to integrate the findings with the general literature on wine marketing, services and relationship marketing, and business strategy. This approach would provide the authors with the means to integrate all their diverse data into a coherent whole that would highlight the importance of relationship marketing strategies in developing a sustainable and successful wine tourism strategy.

About the Author
Tom Richardson is Vice President and Chief Scientist at Flarion Technologies, Inc., New Jersey. He was awarded his Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1990 from M.I.T., after which he worked for 10 years at the Bell Labs' Mathematical Sciences Research Center. He is the inventor of over 20 patents.

R�diger Urbanke is a professor in the School of Computer and Communication Sciences at the Ecole Polytechnique F�d�rale de Lausanne, Switzerland (EPFL). He was awarded his Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1995 from Washington University, after which he worked for Bell Labs until joining the faculty at EPFL in 1999. He is currently on the board for the 'Foundations and Trends in Communications and Information Theory' series for the IEEE.

Useful only as an additional reference book

This book was required reading for my graduate level advanced coding topics course. My first issue with the text is its clunky notation. Expressions and equations are written in unusual fonts. Super and sub scripts appear awkward, and the authors seem to introduce their own notation for convolution. Besides the cumbersome typesetting, the book has a somewhat scatterbrained approach for organizing material.

This book is essentially about LDPC codes, almost exclusively. The book is good as a side reference, perhaps to supplement a more organized and clearly written text such as Lin & Costello, but not as an introductory text, or a text one would use for clarifying concepts. The text by Todd Moon is a far superior reference.

Overall, I do not recommend this book. I've not gotten much use out of it all semester.

A very good book on iterative decoding

This book is your "one stop shop" to learn all about low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes and iterative decoding. This seems to be the primary intention of the authors since they don't talk about anything that isn't related to LDPC codes or iterative decoding. This book is not meant as an introductory course in coding theory. It is very good for an advanced course in iterative decoding and as a good reference material for research.

Pros:
1) The material is self contained.
2) Detailed references to technical papers.
3) A complete picture of the material is provided (including all the "fine print" mathematics and stuff).
4) Rigorous proofs are provided for most of the important results.

Cons:
1) Slightly cumbersome notation (especially in chapter 4). E.g., there are four different functions denoted by the letter 'a' in four different scripts (fonts) in one section!
2) The ebook version (not the Kindle version) has DRM and is intended to be viewed only with Adobe Digital Editions. Digital Editions does not render the mathematical expressions correctly, making the DRM version unusable.

An Outstanding Work by Two Experts on the Topic

Dr. Richardson and Urbanke have made some important controbutions on the theorical analysis of message-passing decoding on LDPC code in special, code on graph in general. I read this book with the hope to pick up some analysis skills on iterative decoding. In general, I understand that experts in an area does not necessary the best persons to write a good and worthy textbook, especially one with hot topic and title like "'Modern' Coding Theory" ... if you know what I mean.

To my surprise, this is a well-written book that provides me a lot of background on the topics far beyond my expectation. Allow me to use many nice approaches of introduction chapter to explain why I like this book.
1. After warmup defintions and exmaples, the authors bring in Gilbert-Varshamov lower bound and Elias upper bound for minimum Hamming distance of code. Then they use Chebyshev's inequality, the concept of theshold decoding and Gilbert-Varshamov bound to prove the existence of non-zero rate code of zero error probability. (Initially I was quite surprised by assigning those fundamental bounds as problems, but after few hour's effort on the problems to make myself feel comfortable with the results, I started to appreciate author's approach to stay on their main themes, anaysis of capacity approaching codes, and let you learn by working out your parts. Anyway all the proofs can be found from several excellent classical coding textbooks or even Google).
2. Another neat approach by define Shannon's random ensemble, define MAP (maximum a-posteriori), ML (Maximum likeihood) and APP (a-posterior probability) use Baye's rule to show their relations. Then use random ensemble's uniform code and statistic independent codewords properties, helped again by Chebyshev's inequality and theshold decoding to prove Shannon's channel coding theorem under binary symmtric channel. This is the cleanest proof of channel coding theorem I ever see. The authors again use "threshold" to prove capacity. The concept of threshold is introduced by Gallager in LDPC decoding, can be extended to Turbo code decoding.
3. Use Elias upper bound to prove that opitimal minimum Hamming distance code is bound away from channel capacity, used to argue bounded distance decoder is not sufficient.
4. Introduce Elias generator ensemble and Gallager's parity ensemble, prove binary linear code achieve channel capacity.
5. Use error exponent bounds of block code and convolutional code to quantify decoding complexity and delay. Comment that a similar theorem for iterative decoding is the most needed open question.
6. Use Hamming code over binary erase channel and Venn diagram to preview iterative (local) encode and decode. Show iterative decoding is not optimal in some case. However argues iterative decoding is a low-complexity (inverse of coding gap) decoding scheme to approaching capacity.

8. Label figures, definitions, examples, theorems and key equations by one sequence, which are a flow of important results. Proof throughout text without explicit treatment. Proof as core text to read through.

10. Every chapter ended with an extensive historic note on related topics.

In summary, this book is an outstanding work by two experts on the topic. Highly recommended to anyone who feel serious on the topic.

About the Author
David F. Groebner is Professor Emeritus of Production Management in the College of Business and Economics at Boise State University. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering and a Ph.D. in business administration. After working as an engineer, he has taught statistics and related subjects for 27 years. In addition to writing textbooks and academic papers, he has worked extensively with both small and large organizations, including Hewlett-Packard, Boise Cascade, Albertson’s, and Ore-Ida. He has worked with numerous government agencies, including Boise City and the U.S. Air Force.

Patrick W. Shannon, Ph.D. is Dean and Professor of Supply Chain Operations Management in the College of Business and Economics at Boise State University. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, he has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in business statistics, quality management, and production and operations management. In addition, Dr. Shannon has lectured and consulted in the statistical analysis and quality management areas for more than 20 years. Among his consulting clients are Boise Cascade Corporation, Hewlett-Packard, PowerBar, Inc., Potlatch Corporation, Woodgrain Millwork, Inc., J.R. Simplot Company, Zilog Corporation, and numerous other public- and private-sector organizations. Professor Shannon has co-authored several university-level textbooks and has published numerous articles in such journals as Business Horizons, Interfaces, Journal of Simulation, Journal of Production and Inventory Control, Quality Progress, and Journal of Marketing Research. He obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Montana and a Ph.D. in statistics and quantitative methods from the University of Oregon.

Phillip C. Fry is a professor in the College of Business and Economics at Boise State University, where he has taught since 1988. Phil received his B.A. and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Arkansas and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Louisiana State University. His teaching and research interests are in the areas of business statistics, production management, and quantitative business modeling. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Phil has consulted with and provided training to small and large organizations, including Boise Cascade Corporation, Hewlett-Packard Corporation, the J.R. Simplot Company, United Water of Idaho, Woodgrain Millwork, Inc., Boise City, and Micron Electronics. Phil spends most of his free time with his wife, Susan, and his four children, Phillip Alexander, Alejandra Johanna, and twins Courtney Rene and Candace Marie.

Great entry-level business stats book

People should stop posting reviews with those reviews based on the condition of the book received, the shipping speed, etc. You should rate the seller based on this information. The reviews here should be product-focused and based on the content of the product, value for the money, etc.

Anyways, I am completely surprised at the negative reviews for prior editions. I needed an entry-level business stats book to refresh my understanding of applied statistics before taking a more advanced graduate-level course. This book was excellent for my purpose. It lends itself well to self-study. It does present the math and formulas but doesn't overwhelm you with them. Instead it focuses on application and interpretation, which is what every book should focus on given the multitude of software programs available. There are many, many examples to reinforce the material presented. The solutions manual is also great. Very colorful and modern. The text is also succinct.

I subtracted a star because (and I hope the authors are reading these reviews)...there needs to be integration of other software packages besides Excel and Minitab. I think the authors made a good decision in moving away from in-text integration of Minitab and focusing more on Excel, but the reality is that they need to support other packages like JMP, SPSS, etc.

Otherwise, the authors did a great job, and helped me to prepare for my graduate course after a significant absence from statistical work.

Majors on the minors - online course is a useless typing test

This book has long and laborious examples which take up most of the text. It is heavy on these overly-detailed stories and short on information. But the thing to avoid at all costs is the online Pearson Course Compass MyStatLab or whatever it's called. Unless that is, you love typing in long, longer and extra long tedious lists of numbers. It is much more of a mind-numbing typing test than anything to do with statistics or business. Once you accurately retype number after number after tedious number, you've totally forgotten any point of learning that might have been related. Next, you get to spend hours and hours and hours making sure you round and truncate exactly and precisely just as the course wants you to with six digit accuracy, or guess what? You get to do it again, and again and again until you guess exactly right! Unbelievable! Oh and one more thing, the questions in the test bank for this class are only vaguely related to the text and certainly completely unrelated to the online suffering. Don't bother with the book or the online course as prep for the exams. Get yourself a real book with tough examples and clear explanations of theory and practice (unlike this book), because the tests are not easy. This online course should be administered to convicted criminals as punishment. AVOID AT ALL COSTS if you value your sanity.

Negatives
- Business Application: This book teaches you to use two different programs (Minitab & Excel) in order to do statistics. This is the biggest joke of the book! You are better off doing the the problems by hand because the ways in which they try to teach you to use excel are completely useless. My professor would give us weekly quizes and he would ask us to solve problems using Excel, but the book was such a poor tool that I would have to go and "Google" how to solve the problems with Excel and learn all over again. I spent hours and hours of extra time because I was learning how this book taught (an antiquated hand written approach) and then re-learning Excel approaches. No business does any sort of statistics this way.
- Student Solutions Manuel: I had hopes in the beginning that this would be a tool in helping me learn how the book was arriving at the answers to the questions and problems. Not only did it not help in any way to learn how to do the problem in Excel, but the written out approaches were shabby and half hearted. It seemed as though they had some teacher's aids working on this, but they had no care or desire, so they did what they needed to in order to get by, but nothing more. Such a let down.

Positives
-The only positive I can think of for this review is that I have to retake stats for my degree and I am using a different book this semester. It is called Modern Business Statistics by Anderson, Sweeney, and Williams. The focus of this book is to teach how to do statistics with Excel. This is a far superior book, especially when it comes to actual business applications.

Other classmates had older versions of this book and they were worse than the eighth edition. I hope this review is helpful to any students and to any professors.

PS If you are stuck with using this book, but do have a professor who is expecting you to do work in Excel extensively I would suggest this youtube channel for help. The guy is a professor and does a great job explaining almost everything this book left out. Best of luck! [....] I don't know if links are allowed, if they are not the channel is named excelisfun and this is the site to download his tutorials [....]
