The Fourth Edition is an updated and important text for people with whom need basic principles in marketing and management explained as it applies to the airline industry.
Airline Marketing and Management is a gem because it carefully breaks down major marketing and promotion concepts all the way down to smaller segments with great examples.
This book is a classic. Readers will get an indepth understanding of aviation and, surprisingly, why the airline industry is still in shambles today. It covers the intricacies of product design and development, pricing and revenue management, pricing and revenue management, distribution channels, and selling and advertising policies.
Many of the "tried and proven time after time" principles are, for the most part, still ignored by airline managers today. The author is diligent in his effort to examine "time-proven principles."
This is a marketing book about the fundamentals. Can't move on until you got them down!

better books are out there....

I just finished reading the 5th edition. I would recommend this book ONLY to those individuals who have zero concept of the airline industry or who have never taken a basic marketing course. Otherwise this book will be a tedious and boring read, exacerbated by the endless typos and horrible writing style and sentence structure. Much of what is written is commonsense and one is often left thinking "no s**t." For those who seek a more academic analysis or more advanced treatment of the subject, I would recommend looking at stuff by Doganis or Holloway.

About the Author
Raymond Carver was born in Clatskanie, Oregon, in 1938. His father was a saw-mill worker and his mother was a waitress and clerk. He married early and for years writing had to come second to earning a living for his young family. Despite small-press publication, it was not until Will You Please Be Quiet Please? appeared in 1976 that his work began to reach a wider audience. This was the year in which he gave up alcohol, which had contributed to the collapse of his marriage. In 1977 he met the writer Tess Gallagher, with whom he shared the last eleven years of his life. During this prolific period he wrote three collections of stories, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Cathedral and Elephant. Fires, a collection of essays, poems and stories, appeared in 1985, followed by three further collections of poetry. In 1988 he completed the poetry collection A New Path to the Waterfall.

Carver for friends

Try to rate a Carver short stories collection is like trying to rate your father actions. You just can't judge him, you only can stare at him. You can even try to understand him, but you don't really have to. There is something beautiful and small hidden in every adjective, every description, every end of a story. Raymond Carver's love for human actions is everywhere in his writing. He puts big attention in little details, uncovering the small moments in every relationationship. You and your wife. Your wife and her friends. Tons of couples having dinner with other couples. Every little thing is a whole world for Carver.
This book comes with four new stories recently discovered, a couple of great essays (the great "My father's life"), early stories, introductions, books reviews and a small uncomppleted fragment of a novel. Definitively, it's Carver for friends. If you are not familiar with his books, you should start with his most famous books, as "What we talk abgout when we talk about love", or his first collection of stories, "Will you please be quiet, please?". Any other case, you are welcome to enter this house.

New stories great; disappointing book for real Carver fans

I am excited that there are "new" stories by Raymond Carver. "Call If You Need Me" and "Kindling" are among his best. The rest of the book is disappointing to me: I didn't realize that this would just be the new stories tacked on to NO HEROICS, PLEASE. Essentially, serious readers of Carver's work are being asked to buy the same book twice. "Call If You Need Me" can be found in this year's O. Henry anthology, and "Kindling" can be found in the current edition of Best American Short Stories. The other new stories, I guess, can be found in past issues of Esquire magazine. If the new stories were instead collected in some other way - say, in a slim volume alone, or with some unpublished work by other worthy writers, then I wouldn't be as disappointed. I was expecting a new book altogether -- not just new pages. Still, these stories need to be read. NO HEROICS, PLEASE is a book worth owning, too. If you don't already own it, then I recommend this title. Otherwise, find the new stories elsewhere.

About the Author
Gary Klein, PhD, a senior scientist at MacroCognition LLC, was instrumental in founding the field of naturalistic decision making. Dr. Klein received his PhD in experimental psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1969. He spent the first phase of his career in academia and the second phase working for the government as a research psychologist for the U.S. Air Force. The third phase, in private industry, started in 1978 when he founded Klein Associates, a research and development company that had grown to thirty-seven employees by the time he sold it in 2005. He is the author of Sources of Power: How People Make Decisions; The Power of Intuition; Working Minds: A Practitioner's Guide to Cognitive Task Analysis (with Beth Crandall and Robert Hoffman); and Streetlights and Shadows: Searching for the Keys to Adaptive Decision Making. Dr. Klein lives in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Inspired by Martin Seligman and other positive psychologists, Gary Klein turned away from studying errors in decision making and focused on how experts like firefighters solve problems successfully. He is most interested in how we have and use insights. "When we put too much energy into eliminating mistakes, we're less likely to gain insights. Having insights is a different matter from preventing mistakes."

Klein began by observing instances of creative problem solving that did not fit the accepted four-stage model of creativity consisting of preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification (from economist Graham Wallas' 1926 The Art of Thought). He also saw important differences between the lab experiments and unfamiliar problems used to study problem solving and the real-life insights of experienced professionals working in their areas of expertise. Klein started from scratch, collecting his own set of critical incidents and examining them for patterns. He was careful to include instances of failed insight as well as instances of success.

Klein concluded that we achieve insights by reorganizing our thinking into a new story about the problem we are trying to solve. His model highlights the importance of five factors in achieving insights. "Eventually I was able to sort these 120 cases into five different strategies for gaining insights: connections, coincidences, curiosities, contradictions, and creative desperation. Did the incident rely on a person making a connection? Did the person notice a coincidence as a trigger for the insight? Was the insight triggered by some curiosity-- an odd fact or event? Did it depend on seeing a contradiction? Or was the person stuck, desperately seeking some way out of an impasse?"

The first section of the book describes Klein's research methods and how each of the five factors was identified. It also debunks common beliefs about problem solving. For example, an incubation period is unnecessary for creative insight, reasoning by analogy is productive when it involves an expert applying analogies from previously-solved problems, and computational models of searching a problems space to choose between possible solutions do not match how human experts think.

The final two sections describe how insights are often blocked and what can be done to facilitate insightful problem solving. Most interesting is Chapter 12: How Organizations Obstruct Insights." It discusses how the high value many organizations place on predictability and reduction of errors discourages risk-taking and pursuing new strategies. "Insight is the opposite of predictable. Insights are disruptive. They come without warning, take forms that are unexpected, and open up unimagined opportunities. Insights get in the way of progress reviews because they reshape tasks and even revise goals. They carry risks-- unseen complications and pitfalls that can get you in trouble. So insights make you work harder." Another nugget is Klein's tongue-in-cheek list of methods to block insight. If you have a distaste for arbitrary deadlines and other organizational nonsense, you will find it enjoyable as well as useful.

This is a useful discussion of the nature of insight and how to recognize and foster it. It strikes a good balance between research depth and practical application. Researchers will also find it useful for Klein's candid discussion of this methods and the value of a naturalistic approach to studying decision making. Exposes Some Hypocrisy

I always wondered why it took so long for the human race to put wheels on luggage. Cognitive psychologist Klein unravels this conundrum and the more important need to more effectively solve problems and get things done. It is amazing how little we know about insights, how they are formed or what prevents them from being found. I love what Klein does for a living...observing people in their natural setting and unraveling the behavior behind their motivations and their abilities. The examples will entertain and educate. I both laughed and shook my head when he exposes businesses for their hypocritical stance of promoting creativity and innovation all the while blocking new ideas and playing it safe. There are plenty of lessons for individuals and organizations who have open minds and who recognize the need to do away with unhealthy biases.

While referee's have better insight than those in the stands

Very academic in style, meaning a broad examination of others' stories, without any meaningful personal stories on insight. While referee's have better insight than those in the stands, I'd prefer coaching from a player. I'll concede his diagnosis of how corporate CYA does not encourage pursuit of insights was spot on, there was not enough practical guidance to make this worth the effort. Interesting stories and a good structure around it, but like so many of these types of books, leaves the reader without the last mile of making it useful.

This is a remarkably readable book for young people ready to enter college. The advice is concise, but often presented in a humorous fashion. Because it isn't a wordy tome, the book invites readers to read just a little bit more, and the topics covered are important for consideration.

The fresh advice covers topics today's high school students probably haven't though about, and it may surprise them to learn that there are often a variety of ways to address a problem.

The format invites scanning, and that approach will provide insight into issues that weren't encountered at home or in local schools. All the rumors about the freshman fifteen, roommate problems, teachers' expectations, being home sick, making new friends are covered. The advice is to the point and worthy of consideration.

Take the title literally...

I have a high school senior and thought this would be a perfect stocking stuffer. I read the reviews and thought perfect, yes, he needs this now! I must say I was somewhat disappointed. Yes, it is small. Very similar to those small desktop daily word or motivational calendars. That's not the problem, the issue is the book binding...you're hesitant to open the book entirely for fear of tearing it at the seam. Next is the presentation of the information. It is literally, 1001 things that the author feels every college student needs to know. There are no details, explanations, or relating stories. Just bottom line statements/pointers you should know. Some of the things are what you'd believe to be common sense...but they really aren't, not to teenagers entering college anyway. And it is for this reason I'd recommend it for students entering or in their junior year of high school. It's helpful, but just not what I was looking for.

I purchased this book because I'm starting college in a month. It has been extremely helpful and made me think about things I wouldn't have thought about otherwise. It had many good tips about every topic. It helped me learn how to stay focused on my goal, which, of course, is graduating on time. I really recommend this!

About the Author
DIRK SWANEVELDER is currently completing his doctoral studies on plant-insect interactions. In both his masters and honours degrees he worked on the genus Clivia, first investigating different tissue culture protocols for multiplying Clivia miniiata, before examining the genetics, ecology, taxonomy and distribution of the genus. He has authored numerous articles for the Clivia Society Yearbook, as well as scientific papers and is co-author of descriptions of a new species, a natural hybrid and varieties in the genus.

ROGER FISHER is a Professor of Architecture in the Department of Architecture, University of Pretoria. He has taught in the programs of architecture, landscape architecture and interior architecture for the past twenty years. His interest in the genus Clivia is as a hobbyist and as an aspect of cultural heritage. He is a member of the Clivia Society and he currently edits the Clivia Society Newsletter and is lead editor for the Clivia Society Yearbook.

If you are a Clivia enthusist then this book is for you LOTS of information on the history and natural habitats. And as you read you also find out lots of tips and techniques to use on your own collection. Really gets in depth on the scientific side, hybridizing and genetics. List of groups to join for more information. Good examples of plants and descriptions

Makes sense of difficult concepts, and is a fun, easy read

This is actually the only tech book I have ever read cover-to-cover. The author is a natural teacher. I tried a different react book and a bunch of online tutorials, and the concepts just didn't "click" for me. But after reading this, I understand it alot better. If you're starting at square one with react, this is square one.

Side note: it's also very nicely designed. Shouldn't matter that much for a tech book, but then again we ARE talking about the view layer here!

Absolutely amazing.

Absolutely blown away with how good of a book this is. I've been trying different tutorials, along with a couple of paid video courses. The video courses were fairly good, but they started off with complex projects and built them from the ground up. While it was cool to see how a complex app is actually built with React, there is no replacement for how Kirupa has figured out how to explain everything so simply. One difference here is that he starts with the very minimal things you need to know, explains those, and then expands to something a little more complex in the next chapter. This, combined with some humor, is just perfect. I've read a lot of IT and development books over the years, and I think this may be the best one I've read.

I'm only around halfway done with the book, but wow, again, I'm blown away. I don't generally write reviews much, but I had to on this one. You're a natural teacher man, and thank you for this one! Seriously, thank you.

If I could give this one more than 5 stars, I absolutely would.

This is the book to get up & running with React.JS

I found this book to be an amazing introductory text to learning React. Leveraging creativity interspersed with a bit of humor, the author took complex topics and made it more easily understood. Even when the difficulty ramped up, Kirupa made the dry and mundane almost non-existent. I can't recall once wishing for the book to end. That's tough to do - definitely more art than science. If you're looking for a solid, working understanding of getting up & running with React - this is the book.

About the Author

Luciano da Fontoura Costa is a full professor at the Instituto de F�sica de S�o Carlos, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and head of the Cybernetic Vision Research Group and the Multidisciplinary Computing Group. He holds BScs in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, as well as a MSc in Applied Physics and a PhD in Electronic Engineering. Roberto M. Cesar Jr. holds a BSc in Computer Science, a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, and a Ph.D in Computational Physics. He is currently a lecturer at the University of Sao Paulo.
