Don't buy this definition paperback for the exorbitant price

This book is nothing more than a definition book. I would say it's worth is about $5 to $10. It is ridiculous to sell this book for over $50. Amazon should state what it is.... A very concise book of clinical terms defined. I am returning it for a refund.

Still valid and applicable, with some gaps

This is one of the most comprehensive books on software estimation techniques and supporting statistics in print. True, this book is deficient in object-oriented estimation, but that gap is filled by the definitive text on that subject, "Object-Oriented Design Measurement" ISBN 0471134171.
One thing the author is noted for is backing up assertions with statistics and data. This book is no exception. The full spectrum of estimation techniques is covered in great detail, and the scope of this book starts with background material on estimating, and then addresses all of the major techniques.
It is the scope of this book that makes it so valuable six years after publication. Techniques drawn from software project management, methods using coefficients and adjustment factors (i.e., COCOMO and Rayleigh Curve), and function points are covered in detail, as are other methods. In addition to software development estimating, the coverage extends to documentation estimating, and maintenance estimating - two areas not commonly addressed in the same detail and depth into which this book goes.
Weighing in at 700 plus pages this book is still applicable to most project and development environments, with the only outdated material related to tools and information resources. Most of the techniques cited are tried and true and will work in most contemporary environments and settings.
Despite some of the shortcomings noted above this book is an essential resource for project managers and SQA professionals who are involved in either the estimating process or tracking key performance metrics throughout application and system lifecycles.

Lots of Data for the Price of a Book

This book contains lots of useful data on the software development process -- including productivity -- using both LOC and IFPUG Function Points. It includes basic rules of thumb for estimating schedules and effort. It is a good starting point for organizations that do not have their own historical data to base their estimates on. An excellent reference to have within reach if you work with software measurement.

Gompers and Lerner have written the best book on venture capital thus far. The authors have done a great service to entrepreneurs, VCs, and the entire business community with this work.
It is written, organized, and executed at perfect pitch and should be read by anyone considering taking the plunge into entrepreneurship, pursuing a career as a VC, or simply wanting to know more about the complexities and true nature of venture capital.
As venture capital gradually becomes more plentiful in the next 24 months, reviewing this work should be required of serious-minded professionals.

The duke approached the pianoforte and gave a little bow to Vanessa. "Please, be seated," he said, indicating the stool she'd just vacated. He searched through the stack of sheet music and handed her one. "Are you familiar with this piece?"



Vanessa sat down and nodded. Speech was impossible; the duke was standing extremely close, and she could feel the warmth of his big body. Her own body tingled in response. How was she ever going to accompany him on the piano without disgracing herself?



"Excellent." His arm brushed her shoulder when he reached over and arranged the sheet of music in front of her. Tiny slivers of awareness shot through her bloodstream, making it difficult to breathe.



"Are you ready?" The deep voice washed over her like a caress. Straithe gripped her shoulder, and she felt the hot imprint of his fingers through her thin muslin dress. He stayed but a moment, his touch lingering before moving away to stand at the side of the pianoforte.



Vanessa pressed her hands to her burning cheeks and tried to catch her breath. Goodness! What in the world was the matter with her? They were only going to perform together to entertain their grandparents.



Vanessa scanned the music she was about to play, then glanced at the duke for the sign to begin.



He inclined his head, and she plunged into the introduction. As she ran her fingers over the keys, she speedily overcame her fidgets. Losing herself in the music, Vanessa listened as Straithe sang the old love ballad. How easy it would be to pretend the words were meant for her. She peeked at the duke and her eyes collided with his. He held her spellbound, and when he smiled, Vanessa blushed. For that one fleeting moment, she thought that maybe he was singing to her after all. A warm feeling floated through her as she broke eye contact.



When her fingers stumbled over several chords, she heard her grandfather harrumph in disapproval. Straithe slowly turned her way, inclined his head ever so slightly and smiled again, all the while continuing to sing.



Was the duke offering her encouragement? Could his heart be thawing toward her just a little?

Duke 's Promised Bride

This was a very good book. The Duke was betrothed at 19 to a child in the nursery by their grandfather's. When she turned 18 They were to be married. He lost his parents and did not want to love but wanted a marriage of convenience with a dutiful, well-trained wife. He was surprised when he came to escort her and their party to London for the wedding to find she had grown into a beautiful young woman. She noticed he was quite handsome. Her governess and now companion was once engaged to his friend but she broke it off and disappeared when her father committed suicide and was broke. He had still begged her to marry him but she loved him too much.

She had friends who needed to have their first season. The former fiance of her companion got engaged to an acquaintance of the new duchess who was not a pleasant person though she looked like the companion. She came to London a bit later and arrived after the marriage because if illness. The Duke was very upset that his wife had deceived him by not telling him of Wallis being her companion.

It is all brought to a head when they find out. I wish the author had told of the season and perhaps become jealous over attention being given to his wife. I wish we had been told who the unpleasant acquaintance sloped with which allowed the Colonel and friend of the Duke to be free to marry the companion, Wallis. Perhaps those are future stories. It just seemed to end too quickly. I won't mention what happened to the Duchess to make him realize he already loved his wife and she loved him. It did let us know they had at least two kids they were both crazy about. However the real story is in the details I have omitted. It is a quick story to read and it was enjoyable. Hope you enjoyed like I did.

About the Author
Charles E. Thomas, Ph.D., is a professor and division chair at Lee College, where he teaches Process Technology, Safety Management, and Manufacturing Engineering. Widely regarded as the foremost textbook author on process technology, Dr. Thomas is credited with creating the discipline in the 1990s. His prior professional experience includes tenure with Exxon Research and Engineering and Exxon Chemicals in a variety of operational, research and development, and training system roles. He earned his B.A. from Western Illinois University, his M.S. from the University of Texas, and his Ph.D. from Texas A & M University.
