About the Author
Michel E. Marhic is chair professor at the Institute of Advanced Telecommunications at the University of Wales, Swansea. He was awarded his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1974. He has held several positions in academia in the US over the years. He is co-founder of Holicon, Holographic Industries, and OPAL Laboratories. A senior member of the IEEE, and a member of OSA, he has 8 patents, and authored or co-authored about 300 publications. His recent research interests include optical communication systems and nonlinear optical interactions in fibers.

Technical Reference

A timely publication bringing the critical field to both general and specialized reader. In contrast to conventional amplifiers, parametric fiber amplifiers offer more general functionality and, as illustrated by the author, can perform almost any operation of interest: conversion, regeneration, amplification and conjugation (and many more).
While parametric devices have been historically associated with crystalline platform in the past, the book (finally) illuminates the power of long interaction length platform (fiber), emphasizing its considerable superiority, particularly in case of high-bandwidth and continuous wave applications.
The structure of the book is excellent and serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it allows nearly straightforward adoption for graduate course material. Secondly, serves as all-in-one reference for active researcher. Finally, enables the reader to apply the OPAs to vast array of applications, and not necessarily only those in conventional communications.
Perhaps the most important part of the book (particularly appreciated by the researcher in the field) is the last chapter describing the future prospects and grand challenges. The author offers a unique prospective that pioneering contributor in the field would have. Indeed, an active researcher will find very little to disagree with, from the general organization of the book to many keen observations on practical and fundamental aspects.
The field currently represents the most active field in modern photonics and the book is expected to remain valuable reference for times to come.

Comprehensive reference for the exciting field

Fiber-optic parametric amplifiers is a very fast-growing field with applications ranging from telecommunications to ultrafast information processing.
Prof. Marhic's book is a comprehensive source of information on these devices, presented in a very clear and well-organized manner. Students new to this field will find here a description of the underlying physical effects, derivations of the parametric-amplifier equations with one and two pumps, and detailed review of their solutions and applications. The author accompanies every topic and equation by intuitive physical explanations, so that even the novices will never get lost. People like me, already working in this research area, will be delighted to see a wonderful collection of closed-form analytical solutions of both scalar and vector parametric-amplifier equations for a variety of situations, review of state-of-the-art experiments, discussions of the important practical issues (e.g. pump requirements, fiber properties) and future prospects and challenges.
Overall, the fiber-optic parametric amplifiers is the most exciting area of today's nonlinear fiber optics, and this book is a must-have for anyone working in this field.
